Odd experience the other day. I was searching for myself online (as you do) and discovered that there's another person with the exact same spelling of my name. Now my name's not common (in fact in more ways than one. It's also the name of a tiny village in Lancashire, with a huge manor house as pride of place... I should really return there and claim to be Lord of that village). I suspect there are only 3, 4 at a push, people on the whole planet with the same spelling of my name... (there were 3 in a recent UK census) and yet, one more is more famous than me. <drum roll> He was a character in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkerban (DS and PS2 games only). Why would they use that name? Should I be worried? Anyway, have you ever been surprised to hear that a namesake has won a gold medal at the Olympics or been caught shagging a goat in Rhyl? |

I suspect it’s more common that you think. There is a small list of first names to choose from and a finite list of surnames and several billion people who have to share them out. So, according to the law of large numbers, it must follow that people will share names, some more than others. What’s different these days is that Google and Facebook allow you to discover these “coincidences” really easily. For a lark I googled V-V’s real name and came up with some great characters – a headteacher for one, this buffoon for another: As for your Harry Potter link, if it’s only in the games and not the book, do you know anyone who works in the world of gaming/ programming? Those people tend not to be very imaginative and search their memory for a slightly unusual name that won’t be challenged. Or maybe the character is just a floppy-haired fop who likes a beer and to wave his wand around… |

Sharing my name includes an Elvis impersonator as well as an award winning duck breeder. |

Everybody says my name is unusual but there are loads of us in the phone book. Anyway when I google my name the first link is a carnival dancer with a penchant for Vincent Cassel and I can live with that. Still looking for a Mr Christmas to marry if i'm totally honest. |
