To add my tuppence worth, I've always been of the opinion that The Stone Roses is an extraordinarily over-rated album. There are several reasons why it was important at the time, but these have very little to do with the talent of the group, who have consistently proved how bereft they all are since. (And before, actually, remember how atrocious Sally Cinnamon was?) It’s the classic case of timing being everything, which is, of course, what pop music is all about. We were only just post-Smiths, crying out for some new indie deity to replace them. Meanwhile singles sales were declining, the knock-on effect being that fan-based indie music was becoming TOTP mainstream. The timing was absolutely ripe. Even Simon “master” Bates was playing the House of Love, Inspiral Carpets and Stone Roses on his bleeding-heart Radio 1 show, for crying out loud, something inconceivable in the early-mid Eighties. Let’s not be fooled, The Stone Roses is a pop album, nothing more or less, and certainly no more or less important than its contemporaries Appetite For Destruction or even Popped In, Souled Out. In no way, as I think we’ve established, does it stand up against the best of the best. |

Whether or not it should be in the Top Ten I'm still glad I bought it instead of "Stanley Road" that day in 1995. I bought "I Should Coco" at the same time. Now that's a debut LP to be proud of...except "Time" and "Time To Go" |
