In 1990 just 2% of the top ten were by artists who were products of the public school system. In October 2010 it was 60%... I don't follow the charts any more but does that suggest that DJs, Britschool attendees and boy bands are all called Tarquin and Isobella? I blame the oikish 1990 figure on Madchester...

Am I alone in thinking that Jarvis Cocker is, well, a bit of a twat? I mean I used to like him a lot but the last few years I've not really understood why he's so revered. As a frontman; sure. As a general 'top bloke'; nah not for me thanks... Everything about him seems like an act. Right down to that stupid voice he puts on on his radio show... And the stat isn't interesting. Most things that try to make a big deal out of class distinctions aren't interesting. Especially in the case of pop music, where it really, really doesn't matter that much... |
