Anyone else been watching The Secret History of Our Streets? Fantastic BBC series about London areas, focusing on one road, and the impact of developers, immigration and other social changes over the last 100 years. Brilliant. The best so far was the first one, the Deptford one and I particularly recommend that one. They're all still online but Deptford's here: Once the Oxford Street of South London. Tragic. |

Yeah I've been watching these too... it's an interesting series for sure but the Deptford one was hardly a rigorous piece of documentary making. I'm surprised the bloke from the council they interviewed didn't try and sue them! They were trying so hard to make him the villain of the piece, when he was a) actually pretty fair and b) not even working for the council at the time of the slum clearance, it was pretty embarrassing at times... |

I enjoyed the Camberwell Grove one especially as one of my aunts used to live there, directly opposite "the Farm". The Programme didn't mention 80s crime drama Dempsey & Makepeace being partly filmed on the street too - clearly a HUGE fail on the part of the doc-makers

I think it's brilliant because I love Booth's maps anyhow. I'm sorry but that old git from Lewisham council was a twat, sitting in his lovely house looking out at his garden. Even when confronted with evidence he tried to poo poo it. He wasn't responsible for the decisions but he's been responsible ever since for the clear up and keep it hidden part of it. There was not a grain in that man that could be defended. He is part of a much larger living organism that should be put down to give us more oxygen. |
