I think Burchill is a bit of an arse wipe but the only thing that offends me in all that gibberish is that she used the term 'single mother'.

Like any columnist with a HND in Shock Tactics you have to read her articles with a tablespoon of salt. However the reaction to her last column (defending her friend Suzanne Moore against some pretty over the top Twitter attacks from the trangender community) has gone bonkers. Yes, she said some extremely funny but un-PC things but removing the column from the website, referring her to the Press Complaints Committee and MPs demanding she gets sacked is a) anti freedom of speech and b) showing a complete lack of a sense of humour. I disagree with the fact that Burchill's article was 'extremely funny', or that freedom of speech extends to hate speech and abusive name calling. The article should never have been published but, at the same time, should never have been taken down. I too have always taken Burchill's articles with pinch of salt but the criticism and anger that followed Burchill's latest is entirely justified. |
