There are plenty of naff lyrics out there (MacArthur Park for example) but I don't mean those. Have you got any examples of lyrics that just don't work when you think about it? A couple of examples: The Clash - Should I Stay Or Should I Go "If I go there will be trouble And if I stay it will be double" Well there's your answer right there then! Thin Lizzie - Jailbreak "Tonight there's gonna be a jailbreak Somewhere in this town" Really? Where do you think that could be? The library? Any others? |

The other obvious one is Alanis Morisette's song 'Ironic' where the only true irony is that Alanis clearly doesn't know the meaning of the word "ironic". Also what part of lyrics like "We grew up together, Two kids in the park, We carved our initials, Deep in the bark, Me and Alice." and "for twenty-four years I've been living next door to Alice." did Roy "Fuckwit" Brown not understand that lead him to keep asking "Alice? Who the fuck is Alice?" It's not like the verses had all been about someone called Caroline! And who was that idiot who sang "I wish I was a punk rocker with flowers in my hair"? |

That would make it a city surely? How many towns have more than one prison? Good call on Alanis! The most annoying part about that Sandi Thom (sp?) song is that she sings "in 77 and 69 revolution was in the air. Maybe 67 and 76 would have been more accurate, although I'll accept 77. |

There are some great (read: not great) hiphop lyrics. I wonder if Kanye West gets far with this chat up line: “Are you into astrology? Cause I’m trying to make it to Uranus” (Getting It In). Or whether P Diddy understands that, if he pulled his trousers up, he’d be able to carry his $$ in the back pocket, rather than between his cheeks: “Young, black and famous, with money hanging out the anus” (Can’t Nobody Hold Me Down). Moving to rock, what exactly was ‘Stairway to Heaven’ about? “If there's a bustle in your hedgerow/ Don't be alarmed now/ It's just a spring clean for the May Queen?" And as for Blondie in Rapture, what were they on when they (c)rapped this? "And you get in your car and you drive real far And you drive all night and then you see a light And it comes right down and lands on the ground And out comes a man from Mars And you try to run but he's got a gun And he shoots you dead and he eats your head And then you're in the man from Mars You go out at night, eatin' cars You eat Cadillacs, Lincolns too Mercurys and Subarus" |
