If someone wanted to create 10 'top 5' threads in one afternoon, I'd want them to do it, why shouldn't they?

This all seems a bit weird to me, are top 5 posts like oil or something?

I see what you're saying, but the forum isn't flooded with 'top 5' threads, is it? At least not in any kind of bad way.

Bovine's famous 'list' threads are fun to read and post in, but it would be a bit weird and convoluted if they were all in one thread. Each topic can (and hopefully will) go off on it's own tangent, so it needs it's own thread...

Also I don't like the idea of 'once a week 1 person can make a top 5 of something', it's needlessly finicky, if you wanna make a thread, then make a thread, who cares what day it is?

I'm not hugely bothered either way. The existence of a weekly top five thread should not and would not stop anyone posting top fives outside of that thread; just as the new bands thread doesn't stop people highlighting new bands elsewhere on the forum. The idea of having a single thread was that it could be a long running thread that could go off in whatever direction the next person wished to take it, creating odd juxtapositions (for me that's the beauty of it).
90% of new threads on this forum tend to be started by the the same four or five people (Paul alone starts almost half of the threads), whereas many more people contribute to existing threads; I thought doing it in a single thread might lead to more people contributing by providing an impetus to post something that creates a new direction, without whatever it is that puts people off starting new threads (why is that?). Also with it having an unlimited remit with regards to categories, I thought it might attract more people than the other two long running threads (Classics & New Bands). I know some people think Kev & I have been hogging those two threads, but both of us have been increasingly posting in the afternoon to give others a chance, but there haven't been many takers of the opportunity.
As Kev said the other two long running threads only work because it is just one a day; more and people wouldn't bother checking it out. As we already have two daily threads (quite enough, I think), I thought a weekly one might work as well. It's not a big deal, just an idea to get something going on the forum, which has become a little over reliant on Paul & Kev to find new ideas. If it's not a good idea then it won't last, but nobody will have died because of it, so no harm done.

Agree with Michman's rant statement there.

Regarding the new music and classics threads - unless I wake up with a song in my head and desperately feel the need to share it then I leave them both until the evening so others can post. Whatever we do it seems mainly me and Milchy in the classic thread and us two and Trev in the new music thread. Not hogging it, just keeping it going!
