I think I could live entirely on soup. I'd die within three weeks but what a way to go.

Anyway, in the fine traditions of these World Cup tournaments, here's some of the WORLD's Finest pitched up until we have a winner. And as a reaction to recent criticism - specifically that I didn't actually listen to anybody else with the Biscuit World Cup and voted for my own winner - I'll give you lot a say.

Round 1 - Top two in each groups go through (my votes starred).

Group A
Oxtail
Ministrone
*Tomato
*Mushroom

Group B
*Red Pepper
*Spicy Lentil
Pea & ham
Clam chowder (one for Bola)

Group C
Carrot and Corriander
*French Onion
Winter Veg
*Mixed bean

Group D
Potato and Leek
*Chicken
Spring Veg
*Mullagitawny

Hmm. I'm a vegan so more limited maybe as cream is often used, but you can substitute that.

I'll go for.

A
Tomato
Minestrone

B
Spicy Lentil
Red Pepper

C
French Onion
Mixed Bean

D
Potato & Leek
Spring Veg

No gazpacho? The Spanish mercenaries at City wouldn't approve.

On the scientific basis of analysing the results in the last 3 Grand Prix de les Potages Mondial, I think the outcomes would be:

Group A
Ministrone
Tomato

Group B
Red Pepper
Pea & ham

Group C
Carrot and Corriander
French Onion

Group D
Potato and Leek
Chicken

Hmmm no pea, mint and lettuce soup. No butternut squash soup. I need to think on this.

I rarely eat more than about two tins of soup a year; they're usually both mushroom.
I'm about as qualified on this subject as Kev is on chocolate bars, but unlike Kev, I'll use this as a reason to stay out of this debate

If I didn't at least try and contribute to most threads here then they'd all die on their arse like the top 5s one will probably do - reminder - new top 5 can be picked from midnight! If no one's done one by Sunday I'll come up with something rubbish again.

Though king prawn & sweetcorn with ginger and spring onion would beat all of them so the whole tournament's about as meaningful as the Confederation's Cup.

I think that once we have two qualifiers from each group, there should be a group E created as a play-off between soups that didn't make the cut for the initial draw. Then two from that group can go into the next round. I do think butternut squash was a glaring omission. What about chowder or bortsch? I'm not saying they're my favourites, just another two famous soups that didn't make the cut. A personal favorite of mine (I make a lot of soup - homemade stuff) is Italian cabbage and rice soup. I got the recipe out of a really old cook book. I'm aware it doesn't sound great on paper, but it tastes great in a bowl.

I too very rarely venture into soup territory and when I do it's firmly Leak & Potato or Cream Of Pea (there's the occasional dalliance with chicken, but if always promises much yet delivers little). As Pea has been lumbered with the millstone of Ham I will be boycotting this tournament and hiding all your tin openers.

It seems apparent that the lack of rules stated at the start of the tournament has led to some entrants not being happy about the choices of soup available for the voting process. I think a public consultation should have taken place beforehand so that we got a fair representation of the soup world.

My comments were merely designed to try and address this problem, thus making the competition not only more fair, but more appealing to potential voters who may feel left out by the short-sighted nature in which this event was, and I don't use this term lightly, cobbled together.
