Following Kev's inexplicable decision to post Vikki Carr's original version of He's A Rebel in the Classic A Day Thread, here's a thread in which you can post lousy original versions of songs that went on to be classics in the hands of others. Twist & Shout Original by The Top Notes http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDGmogV1Qw8 Classic versions by The Isley Brothers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wKGv6kAylj0 & The Beatles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pVlr4g5-r18 My Little Red Book Original by Manfred Mann http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MqIFR45PuR0#at=12 Classic version by Love http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f-SuGfLhqo4 |

It's not as good as The Crystals version, no. But it's still good! |

I think you have a point, Milchy, it's a fantastic song and she's half throttled it to death. Certainly no classic in her clumsy hands. |

Young at Heart Bananarama do the original http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DrC-RzQAwz8 The Bluebells improve it. A lot. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V7RIerLv2_U (not sure it's a 'classic' though) |

Fighting talk from Kev. Didn't know that Young At Heart was originally recorded by Bananarama (albeit written by Bluebelles) |

I like Dylan's songs but not really when they're sung by Bob Dylan... |

Must agree about Vicky Carr. Far too square and MOR - he’s a rebel because he didn’t hand his homework in on time? He left the toilet seat up? (and spot on about My Little Red Book – Bacharach might not have liked the Love version but it’s massively superior). Iron and Wine’s version of Such Great Heights: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XX5Dan0VE7w is better than the Postal Service one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0wrsZog8qXg In the same way, William Shatner’s Rocket Man: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DvQwXOCKNLY tramples all over Elton’s! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-LX7WrHCaUA |

Marty Robbins made some great records, but his original version of Singing The Blues was pretty tepid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gR7z9SBZwr4 In the hands of Jason Eddy & The Centremen, an undoubted classic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-9S-X3OY-4A |
