Been watching a fair few movies recently.

Amongst them:

Berberian Sound Studio - something of a homage to an Italian horror film maker. It's great on showing how they create sound (it is after all the story of a sound engineer) but low on a plot delivery. Still Toby Jones is terrific as always.

Not fade away - Fictitious American story of a 60s band influenced, mainly by the Stones. Great soundtrack and some brilliant original songs for the band. Story is good, if not amazing.

The Place Beyond the Pines - Ryan Gosling yet again (so Tim can continue his man crush ;) ) in a film that seems to have three part threads. It's quite thrilling in places, especially the surprising outcome of the first thread and though it becomes a tad more predictable thereafter it's still very enjoyable.

Foxfire - Remake of a 90s film but set in the 50s about a girl gang profiting from abusive men. I liked it but it's overly long (2 hours 20 mins) and the acting / direction is only average.

Upstream Color - A real IMDB polariser. Pretentious unfathomable plot but brilliant direction. I hated it.

I've only seen Berberian Sound Studio from your list - great film and loved the soundtrack. The other film I've seen recently is Sightseers - you seen? You'd love it.

Of my recent trips to the cinema, I'd most recommend:

Beware Of Mr Baker

It's Such A Beautiful Day

In The House

Everybody Has a Plan

In The Fog

Beyond The Hills

and
Our Children

Quite liked The Stoker, Star Trek: Into The Darkness, The Place Beyond The Pines and Bernie.
The Look Of Love was Okay. Disappointed with Populaire, Springbreakers, I'm So Excited and the re-release of Journey To Italy; although I did see the latter on a double bill with Rome, Open City, which is superb.
Also liked a couple of the films at April's Czech Film Festival, Alois Nebel & Walking Too Fast

Looking forward to seeing a few films at the Terracotta film festival next weekend and hope to catch a few films showing in the Nikkatsu Studios retrospective at the NFT this month.

Watched Behind the Candelabra last night. Terrific performances by Damon and Douglas and an engaging watch throughout. Great cameo from Rob Lowe as a pippy eyed plastic surgeon.

I'd forgotten that I'd actually met Lowe at a festival once

Recent viewings

Mud - Very good man/boy buddy flick starring Matthew McConaughey (who always seems to play same role)

Welcome to the Punch - A top British cast completely wasted in a light-on-character-detail gangster action movie.

World War Z - Decent but hurried futuristic action caper.

Saw World's End. Thought it would have been better if they'd made it as a comedy!

Saw a decent little Japanese flick the other week called I Wish. Pretty lightweight story for a 2 hour running time but it's rare to see a film so sweet, good-natured and devoid of cynicism. Very charming indeed.

Monsters University was excellent as well, I thought. Got a bit of a rough press but I loved it. Not up at the heights of the first one (Pixar's greatest achievement for me) but I thought it a lovely little tale and strongly observed. Recommended.
