Wrigley's spearmint 'All Right Now' always has the effect of a good cigarette advert I.e it makes the product seem like an extension of your own 'cool' and yet also like some kind of lifestyle choice that makes you cooler than you are... considering it's just selling chewing gum, I find that quite impressive. Also the Levis ads that used 'Heard It Through The Grapevine' (the washing machine, White boxers one), 'Underwater Love' (the mermaids one) and 'Nanny in Manhattan' by the Lilys. These all do a great job of selling more than the product itself, and the music is a big part of that. The 'Mr Soft' Softfruits advert I remember as a very young child (perhaps my earliest TV memory in fact) was wonderfully psychedelic and the music sounded so 'chewy'. I love adverts that had their own jingle as even when it's bad it's kinda good. My favourite soft drink ad is probably the cheesy Sunkist 'Drink it in the Sun' ad because of it's desperate pushing of the Californian dream coupled with it's own kind of 'Sunkist propaganda' jingle. Great stuff. |
