Top 5 original versions of songs covered by The Beatles. I've stuck to songs that were covered on studio recorded records released during the bands lifetime; so nothing from the Hamburg live recordings or BBC sessions. 5) You Really Got A Hold On Me ... The Miracles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ylOQqjaO3Sg 4) Twist & Shout ... The Isley Brothers http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cTaqn8_gMR0 Not, strictly speaking, the original, that was The Top Notes' version, but clearly the version that The Beatles based their version on. 3) Devil In His Heart ... The Donays http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9oEfzk7kToI 2) Baby It's You ... The Shirelles http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BubnTG10QSo 1) Long Tall Sally ... Little Richard http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UtFXYpvVj-A |

I'm not a big fan of Beatles covers (their Decca demo included Besame Mucho and The Sheik of Araby) but I'll offer an alternative five from the albums: Buck Owens and the Buckaroos: Act Naturally http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GpBEBV1wkq4 The Cookies: Chains http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2_f9lrXd_48 Carl Perkins: Honey Don’t http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_TMF3eK2ojY Arthur Alexander: Anna http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ihsfVEFvrxA Little Willie Littlefield: Kansas City http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kTsfrPsikXc |

I have always liked their cover of Chuck Berry's Rock and Roll Music. In fact prefer it to the original. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XSaKQlBZuE http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a8PzCq3sk-k |

The only two Beatles covers I really love are these... Bad Boy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_LZqpTnoWk Dizzy Miss Lizzy - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JDTeGOyMXF4 Considering the material they wrote, listening to them play covers as late teens/young men always feels a bit like watching a soundcheck, or something like that. But they had decent enough taste - most of their best covers being more pop leaning RnR choices rather than the blues they also listened to/hero worshipped, which is totally understandable given their obvious love for hooks! |
