Haven't seen as many films as I'd have liked to this year, so no doubt there are several good ones I've missed , but of those I have seen here's my best of the year list. Top twenty It's Such A Beautiful Day Upstream Colour The Selfish Giant Pussy Riot: A Punk Prayer In The Fog Gravity Compliance Rebellion No Beyond The Hills The Hunt Beware Of Mr Baker The Punk Syndrome Philomena Metro Manilla Basically Johnny Moped In The House Nebraska Blue Is The Warmest Colour Call Girl Worthy mentions: The Spirit Of 45 Django Unchained Bullhead Pieta Lincoln Blue Jasmine Muscle Shoals Suspension Of Disbelief The Stuart Hall Project The Paperboy Gloria Zero Dark Thirty A Field In England Lovelace Alan Partridge: Alpha Papa Gangs of Wasseypur Good Vibrations Liberace: Behind The Canndelabra Blancanieves Wadjda Otway: The Movie McCullin and Chasing Ice both came out last year, but I saw them early this year and so undeservedly fell between the cracks and missed out on both lists. Both would have been near the top for either year. A few good films from the festivals that didn't get a release God Loves Uganda (Docfest) Halima's Path (Raindance) Alois Nebel (Czech film festival) Extraordinary Stories (Argentinian film festival) Imagine (Polish film festival) Channelling (Sci Fi London) To Kill A Beaver (Polish film festival) Aftermath (Raindance & Jewish film festivals) Lidice (Czech film festival) When Day Breaks (Raindance) Thesis On a Homicide (Raindance) The Whirlpool (Raindance) Haunter (Sci fi London) Why Don't You Play In Hell (London Film Festival) |

Watched Captain Phillips last night. Superb. Unfortunately I watched Gravity about a week or so ago on a small screen and it lost all the 3D wonder and just seemed far fetched and ordinary. |

No fans of About Time then? Ho ho. I liked most of those mentioned. Also The Sessions. And Sightseers was the best film Paddy Considine never appeared in. |

Yer way ahead of me Milchman. I'm gonna click on that link now and you'd better have The Guard in there or there'll be words. |

The very one. From the quill of Martin McDonagh's Brother. Who's probably pissed off at constantly being referred to as Martin McDonagh's Brother. What Richard Did was also a 2012 release worth watching. |

Milchman, if you go to the Polish film festival this year, I strongly recommend going to see Life Feels Good at the Riverside on 26th April. |

I know it's probably a 2012 release but I just watched Searching For Sugar Man. How amazing was that? |

Oh. I though he was condemned to obscurity till the SA crew came knocking. I can't find the discussion on it here. Maybe you'd lash up a link like a good man, if it's handy to do so. |

Thanks. I pretty much share your own view on this one. That his music was an instrument of protest among white South Africans was independent of his success elsewhere, but the latter not entirely from the portrait of him as an artist who was effectively deported back to obscurity. That is the parallel subject of the film, along with corresponding notions of success and the indomitable spirit that finds alternative valves regardless of conventional ideas of success. The Australia/NW success doesn't undermine this entirely but it certainly chews at the potency of it and has left a funny aftertaste. A remarkable man nonetheless, and a riveting insight to South African resistance. Was sorry to hear the filmmaker took his own life recently. |
