Went to see the 1987 film Candy Mountain at the ICA on Sunday. The cast included Tom Waits, Joe Strummer, Dr John, David Johanssan, Leon Redbone, Arto Lindsay and Mary Margret O'Hara, all in straight acting roles. So I was thinking, which musicians turned actors cut the mustard and which stink the place out. A few to get things rolling: Cutting the mustard: Mark Wahlbeg Frank Sinatra Kris Kristofferson Tom Waits Justin Timberlake Cher David Bowie in Baal or The Man Who Fell To Earth Stinking the place out: Prince Mick Jagger Joe Strummer Madonna Ringo Starr John Lydon David Bowie in anything other than Baal or The Man Who Fell To Earth |

Agree about Bowie I hear great things about Viv Albertine's performance in Exhibition, though I'm not drawn to Joanna Hogg's worlds. Cuts the mustard: John Lurie Billy Idol (well, he was the best thing in an Adam Sandler movie, and it's the best Billy Idol portrayal I've ever seen) Steve Earle (the Wire) and yes to Justin Timberlake Stinkers Sting (the farce of stage and screen) Mos Def Justin Rice/ Christian Rudder (Bishop Allen and mumblecore "stars") |

I loved Beyonce in Goldmember and I loved Puff Daddy (formally P Diddy, Diddy) in Get him to the Greek. I hate Madonna acting - it's ![]() I think Justin Timberlake and Mark Wahlberg are the two most successful crossovers. |

Will Smith was a musician first, then an actor. You can't fault him in The Pursuit of Happyness. Art Garfunkel is good in Bad Timing. |

Steven Seagal would probably say he's a musician turned actor and you wouldn't want to argue with him, his knife skills are exemplary. |
