I saw Road last night; a documentary film about two great sets of sporting brothers, Joey and Robert Dunlop and Robert's sons William & Michael Dunlop. An excellent film and an enjoyable Q&A afterwards with not only William and Michael, but also, John McGuiness. Anyway, as, following the success of the likes of Hoop Dreams and When We Were Kings, there's been several, made for cinema, sporting docs, I thought I'd take a lead from Marg's request for great music documentaries, and ask which sports documentaries are the best? I have several personal favourites (including an amateur film about Beryl Burton, definitely for cycling fans only), but I'm thinking of ones where the appeal isn't just for the hardcore fans of the sport involved, but have enough historical and human interest to transcend the genre. A few suggestions: Senna When We Were Kings Road Wild In The Streets Bobby Fischer Against The World Next Goal Wins |

Another vote for when we were Kings. Also Fire in Babylon about the West Indies Cricket team of the late 70's. Orient - Club For A Fiver. Orient at their lowest and being managed by "bring your dinner" Sitton didn't help. And he sacked "oooh Terry Howard" at half time caught on camera. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T0p_4YwXGn4 An Impossible Job - Poor Graham Taylor still has not lived this down. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uW0ebsf7ZRs |

Great suggestions there, milchman. With you on Senna, When we were Kings, and Bobby Fischer Against the World was such a brilliant show. What a character. I must watch it again. Sticking with the chess theme, have you seen Barbaric Genius? It's based on John Healy's compelling biography The Grass Arena. An eye-popping read on the brutal life of a former hard-drinking homeless genius, boxing champion and self-taught chess master. The story of how The Grass Arena came to be published, shelved, then subsequently published is interesting itself. Worth reading, then seeing. Didn't know there was a film out on the Dunlop Brothers. Very popular across all divides. Joey was as phenomenally decent as he was down-to-Earth. Must give it a gander. |

Senna's almost flawless as a piece of documentary making, but you really do need to take the representation of Prost with a pinch of salt... I know that films hinge on having good vs. bad narratives and that but they truth is they were both pains in the arse as well as being simultaneously good drivers and good men too. |
