... Nottingham!

Apparently same area as an existing shop (Music Exchange?) and where Fopp intend opening a store. Sounds like Nottingham is fast becoming a music hotebed... Maybe time for SPT to move back there?

Could Rough Trade slowly be turning into what I thought they might when HMV nearly closed.

I reckon in 5 years they could have at least 8-10 UK stores:

London (x2)
Nottingham
Cardiff
Glasgow
Newcastle
Manchester
Bristol
Leeds
Birmingham

Maybe. Possibly.

Brum and Glasgow sound like good shouts. Suspect they'd be wary of pushing out much beyond them though I'd name Bristol and Sheffield as decent sized places that are currently seriously under represented with outlets.

It'll never be as good as Selectadisc but got to be a nice thing. There's already a Fopp in Nottingham. Unlike in Sheffield, which as you say is undercooked with only a small HMV and a couple of v small second-hand places in town.

We do have Record Collector in Broomhill but it's v patchy on getting new stuff, and they just give a 'what-are-you-going-to-do?' shrug when you ask for something that isn't in. I do pop in now and again out of duty/for 2nd hand, but have had to give up on them a bit.

There seems to be a bit of an anti-RT mood these days. Are they really expensive or are records just expensive because pressing runs are still so small?

Popped in the new Sister Ray yesterday. Felt really odd. It's across the road from the old shop and is about a third as wide but has two floors.

Obvs other will know more, but I don't think it's really pressing costs, on the grounds that labels like Song, by Toad still happily sell new albums on vinyl at c£12 a pop.

I think it's just that buying back your favourite albums on vinyl is the new version of the 'getting a CD copy' which flowered in the 90s for people with more money than sense. There's definitely a sense that it's now a luxury item and prices simply reflect that - in the same way that CD prices back then bore no relation at all to production costs.

Sadly Record Store Day shoulders some of the blame. The £6.50 limited edition singles/£25 albums that emerged there showed people would pay, so it has became industry standard.

I suspect Song, By Toad are doing it for the love rather than any financial advantage. The £25 LP is not in any way justifiable.

Also worth a read:

“The start-up costs would be astronomical,” he says. “Getting a hold of presses is pretty much impossible; there’s no one making new presses so, if you want to start up a plant, getting a hold of presses would be very difficult. There’s nowhere to get them. And you need people with very precise technical skills, and finding those people who can run those presses is very difficult.

“So, really between big set-up costs, the lack of available presses, and then the lack of people with the proper expertise makes starting another plant very difficult.”
