Post subject:  These Kate Bush Gigs Then...

"After 2005 comeback single 'King Of The Mountain', her percussionist, who looks like a crew member from the Black Pearl (fittingly enough, for the nautical theme of what follows), takes centre stage and literally whips up a storm. Footage of the eye of a hurricane gives way to an interlude in which an amateur stargazer attempts to report a mayday from a stricken boat. The screen falls, and the entire stage has been transformed into the undersea ribcage of a shipwreck (with heavy overtones of the Jonah & The Whale story).

The backing singers, notably including Kate's son Bertie (who, she has said, gave her the strength to make this comeback), now double as fellow victims of the capsized vessel. There are trap doors, scary skeletal fish-people, and an overhead rescue helicopter. There's a deliberately corny scene in which the lost woman's son and husband exchange good-natured banter about burning sausages and during which – turn away now if you don't want spoilers – Bush magically appears in a corner of the room. There's a stunning choral finale borrowed from Werner Herzog's Nosferatu. And the PA's surround sound comes into its own, with the recorded voices of Bush's own family – and Robbie Coltrane – attempting to shake her awake with a matronly "You must wake up, child" and a more affectionate "Wake up, luv.""

Aaaaaanyone else glad they didn't actually get a ticket in the end?

Relieved. I've always found her to be horribly overrated, as that profile on BBC4 showed. I don't know 50 words for snow, as she pretentiously claims, but I'll start with 50 words for dull: torpid, tedious, drab, dreary, uninteresting, monotonous, mind-numbing, arse-numbing...

From his surname, I'm presumably distantly related to a member of her band (who also plays in Barclay James Harvest) and his description of her band is the kiss of death: "a stellar line-up including musicians from the bands of Miles Davis, Weather Report, Herbie Hancock and Peter Gabriel..."

I agree with this guy:

I played viola on Kate Bush’s last LP, and laughed myself silly at her nonsensical lyrics about snowmen. The obsequious, unquestioning critical acclaim heaped upon this manifestly overrated singer is rather depressing, and summed up by your reviewer (Kate Bush, Hammersmith Apollo, 27 August) when he describes an audience who “spend the first part of the show clapping everything; no gesture is too insignificant to warrant applause”. Enough said.

I can't understand why she's considered to be so leftfield; she's only leftfield in the context of having chart hits. Her music is really fairly ordinary taken away from that context.

I loved The Hounds of Love album, and would pay to hear it live in its entirety; trad musicians 'n' all.

Is Robbie Coltrane filling in for the disgraced Rolf Harris?

Heh. Now I do like Kate Bush. Absolutely adore Hounds of Love (both halves of it) and her popular output has been frequently glorious. But... can't help but think that 35 years in the performing wilderness has led to a creeping reverence for a prog indulgence that her purring audience would baulk at in the hands of less fashionable old bastards (Wakeman et. al.). Obviously only a mug would've expected a greatest hits set but... it all sounds rather naff.

milchy - "fairly ordinary"? Obviously such a term is wildly subjective but throughout her career, lyrically and musically (and, dare I say, "conceptually") she's been anything but. Overrated or otherwise.

Don't mind her personally. Always found her fairly unique and I like her attitude and the way she does what she wants. Very few people do that, or at least with any success and to that extent. Never bought any of her records mind...

I bought Aerial in an airport on CD before embarking on a flight. I couldn't believe the tinny faraway sound and was cursing her to high heaven until I realised I hadn't connected the earphones fully.

Can we talk about how beautiful she was now?

Some of the reviews I've read, anyone would think that Kate Bush is not only the greatest musical innovator of all time, but also that she can cure cancer, levitate by power of will and that she invented the wheel and scored a hat trick in the 1966 World Cup final!

I follow BBC News on Twitter. A link to a story came up with the heading "Bush Sets New Album Chart Record"

I thought, "Blimey, Gavin Rosdale must be having a bit of a grand comeback!" - then I clicked on the link.

8 albums in this week's top 40 she's managed!
