News is just emerging that Cherry Wainer passed away yesterday. Cherry is best remembered as the organist in Lord Rockingham's XI, with whom she regularly appeared on the television show Oh Boy! She also, in 1959, together with Nico Carstens, made the first ever South African rock & roll record, the 10" mini album Flying High and was very popular in Germany in the post Rockingham two piece she formed with her husband, drummer Don Storer. Her instrumental version of Money, released in 1960, as the B side to a song called Happy Like A Bell, written for her by Cliff Richard, is a great record; should've been the A side. She was also delightfully odd; In these days of musicians contriving eccentricity, that is a much underrated virtue. She recently appeared on the BBC4 program 50s Britannia, still a wonderful personality. Cherry Wainer & Don Storer ... Peter Gunn http://vk.com/video1359709_158023639 Cherry Wainer ... Seems internet stories about Cherry Wainer passing may all stem from a single tweet and that the information is not confirmed. It would be lovely to find that the wonderful Ms Wainer is still with us and my apologies if I've added to the spreading of unfounded rumours. |

Hope it proves not to be right. Normally your obits drift past me, but anyone who was responsible for Hoots Mon! is a heroine in the SPT household. If called upon to agree between the four of us the apogee of popular music, that would be it (closely followed by Liqudator, Atomic, Antmusic and the Laughing Gnome) |

Sadly it's been confirmed that Cherry Wainer has indeed passed away. A unique talent and a key figure in that unsung corner of popular music that is pre-Beatles British rock & roll; not to mention the only Hammond organist to often have her pet poodle sit on the stool beside her when playing!
