Cap'n H has a very good point. I really try to avoid references to other bands where possible, but sometimes it's and a useful attention grabber - especially where you juxtapose unlikely elements. In paranoid stylee, I have swiftly checked my last few reviews to be safe - six bands, two refs. Once 'cos 65 daysofstatic resent being compared to Mogwai so I couldn't resist, though actually contrasted them in the end. The other was the Untamed who, great fun though they are, really ought to have called themselves the Scanadanavian Cramps and be done with. Which I mention to raise a point. It's not just lazy journalism -it's lazy bands too. Too much stuff really is retreads of the other things. There have always been copyists but indie music now has a firmly definable audience and is a viable alternative to the cruise ships for those with the show off gene. Except that simply bashing out the covers is not (yet) indie-acceptable, so a bit of rip-offery is the order of the day. They reap what they sow. But, when you've a bit more time on your hands it is a good discipline to go back through a review and excise the band references and force yourself to write something else to cover the point. If after this the reference is still the best way then fair enough. |

as both a heathen and someone who still doesn't know how to download, i like to have some kind of an idea of what a band are going to sound like. many a time i've bought a record on the basis of a flowery review, and ended up thinking it was shite. |
