Green Gartside is back... http://www.guardian.co.uk/arts/news/story/0,11711,1682443,00.html I was actually at this gig by accident, cos' I went to see The Shortwave Set who were headlining. I had no idea it was Green in the support band until I saw this article, although I think at the time it sounded a bit like him, but it was actually quite rubbish, and amateur rubbish too - I really did think it was a bunch of born again christians trying out a new recruitment strategy (there were lots of songs about Jesus). May be that explains why the audience were so ecstatic. And this from the man that wrote "Jacques Derrida" & "Skank Bloc Bologna". Oh dear. But then again, he did do that single with Shabba Ranks too. |

I remember when I first heard The Sweetest Girl it was one of those hair on back of neck prickling moments. Or summat. Think it was on an NME tape (C80?) |

Just as "'The Sweetest Girl'" (unconvincing faux-soul with a structure clearly dreampt up by a blind man with an EtchOSketch) was the beginning of the end for Scritti (actually, it was rather close to the end of the end), so "Whip It" (clunking satire - though not so clunking that mainstream America couldn't take it at face value - laced with some of the worst jokes in the Devo cannon) was a bleak day for the Akron pranksters. Bet they don't cover "Slap Yer Mammy" or "Penetration In The Centrefold" or even "Gut Feeling" which contains my fave Devo couplet: Centred round a long time ago on your ability to torment When you took the tongs of love and stripped away my garment. The tongs of love?! |
