October 4th 2006 is the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Cable Street. This was one of the most significant events in 1930s Britain, when Oswald Mosley's Blackshirts were turned back as they attempted to march through the East End. The illusions of power and supremacy that Mosley had cultivated were stripped away forever. To mark this anniversary there are a few events taking place in East London - see details below. Wednesday 4th October: 70th Anniversary Commemoration of the Battle of Cable Street (in association with the Jewish Museum). Walk led by Clive Bettington. Departs 5pm from Tower Hill tube. This walk from, Tower Hill to Gardiners Corner looks at one of the most significant political events in the history of the East End, examining in detail the major events of the battle. Tickets £4. Book on 07941 367 882 or c.bettington@jeecs.org.uk Wednesday 4th October: Seminar on the Battle of Cable Street. Toynbee Hall, Commercial Street (closest tube Aldgate East; 7pm. Chaired by Prof Bill Fishman and featuring talks by Sir Nicholas Mosley, who will be discussing his father’s career, and Prof David Cesarani, who will talk on the Myths and Realities of Cable Street. Followed by film show and refreshments. Tickets for seminar only: £12 (JEECS members £10). Confimed bands Inner Terrestrials, PAIN, Bottlejob plus several others tbc. The gig will run from 5pm until 1am . Entry £6. Sunday 8th October: The Battle of Cable Street. Walk led by Ed Glinert, the well known writer. Departs at 1.30pm from Tower Hill tube. This walk looks at the momentous events of October 4 1936.Tickets £8 (JEECS members £6). Rather alarmingly, that flyer makes it look like some skinhead rally, which is surely the opposite to what it is suppose to be about. It’s a great area round there, though, full of history. There’s a Hawksmoor church (St Georges in the East) and its also the scene of the Ratcliffe Highway Murders (a kind of pre-Jack the Ripper east end murder spree). The bloke who (allegedly) did it was buried at the crossroads of Cannon St and Cable Street. Unsuspecting gas workers dug him up in the 1980s apparently, with the stake still implanted in his skull.
