I just read on audiosavvy that Queen is rated the best band ever as they sold the most 4.5m for their album Greatest Hits. What cobblers! Jason Donovan!!! is on the list so help me. Good grief - has the world turned turtle or am I on another planet! Tell me it ain't true. What a bunch of soldiers!!

You're looking at the wrong person, kid, as i'm so going along with that one. Why not Queen as the greatest band? Though the link does not suggest that. It's just saying that theirs had the highest sales. I love a bit of Queen I do and yes I have their Platinum album - 3 discs of wonder, every one a winner.

Spot on, Cavey. I mean, lyrically, they were untouchable. "I'm the invisible man/ I'm the invisible man/ incredible how you can/ see right through me/ (look at me! look at me!)"

Genius.

Just so that drdoze doesn't think he's stumbled into a hotbed of Queendom, let me just say I consider Queen to be shite from a height. A very, very, great height.

Ditto though drdoze was probably only an audiosavvy spammer anyway (I removed the link)

i liked queen when i was little.

now they amuse and entertain me in a nostalgic campy kinda way.

i've done experiments and drawn graphs and i'm reasonably sure that they're one of, if not the uncoolest band of all time.

Do you keep all your posts on file or something, dooks? How the hell did that happen? LOL.

i pressed submit and then this majcally appearing engineer guy who keeps popping up behond me, popped up behind me and started waffling on about updated drawings for king's cross. i must have hit "back" a few times for some reason (was in a vague panic trying to get what was blatantly a message board off the screen while appearing all casual like). then after he'd gone i wasn't sure if i'd submitted it or not and foolishly pressed submit button (again as it turns out) before checking to see if i had in fact double posted. i had.

i am quite hung over.

Anyhoo, let's get a few nominations for "world's uncoolest band" then we can do a poll and announce the results to a weepingly grateful world.

Queen... er.... Hmmm.

I'd better nominate a band I quite like or this'll just be a slag-off-fest (and being "uncool" is not quite the same as being rubbish, just as being "cool" is not the same as being good).

Sparks? Too obscure. Madness?

Help me out, here, people...

the way i see it a lot of novelty pop acts have massive kitch value rendering them while obviously naff kind of ironic cool.

queen for some reason don't have that. maybe it's because they were too aware of their own camp value thus making it impossible for people to claim them in that way. so they have a nasty, po-faced, ben elton penned musical based on their music in the west end and absolutely no credibilty whatsoever. they have been claimed by jumper wearing aunties from berkhampstead.

compare this to sayyyy, motorhead (who, let's not forget were also terminally horribly uncool when i was growing up) who have been claimed by hoxton types as their very own.

which is kind of weird as queen were a flamboyantly gay middle class intellectual artschool band with a massive line in camp self-parody and they're universally derided by the middle class artschool vice magazine reading folk of this world; wheras artless, stinky, warty, speed huffing metal warthogs motorhead (who's singer let's not forget collects nazi memorabilia) are absolutely fine to pretend to like. in fact i think you have to show evidence of owning at least one "vintage" motorhead t shirt to get past security at the old blue last.

I can't help, dear Captain, as I have no idea what cool and uncool is. I like what I like and that's all there is to it.

I think the cool/uncool debate is somewhat redundant with Queen. One of the key attractions about them (I’ve always thought) is they’ve always existed in their own kind of bubble; passing trends and fashions (both “cool” and “uncool” ones) seem to have had no influence on them whatsoever.

Only a band so out of step with the zeitgeist can maintain the type of timeless appeal Queen seem to have.

As for whether they’re any good or not I’m not sure. Personally, I suppose they’re a bit of a guilty pleasure, but I can’t ever recall an instance when I’ve been sitting around thinking “Ooo,, I really want to listen to “A kind of magic” right now..” Doesn’t happen

Still, I reckon the world would be a poorer place without them.

I remember having an argument with the singer out of Homescience about Queen and him telling me that the first 4 Queen albums are classic. I listened to them when I was a kid and liked them then (in the same way I liked some right old shite) but despised them when they played Sun City. On reflection, the Homescience guy was right - the first 4 records stand up well over time but everything after News of the World is just cobblers and their Greatest Hits is my idea of hell!

similar thing with me really. grew up with it. it's a kind of magic was the first cd our family owned and i practically wore it out. before that my favourite record was a queen double live album from 1978 i think.

i particularly like the early stuff that freddy wrote. all the piano based stuff.
