Falconetti
When a band quotes the likes of Godflesh, Portishead, Jesu, Slint, Massive Attack, Codeine, Tricky, Labradford, Cocteau Twins, Dalek, Tortoise, Final, Public Enemy, Swans, Red Snapper, Stars of the lid, Boris, Red House Painters, Jesus Lizard, Sun kill Moon and Fennesz you kinda know your in for something interesting. Alright you might not be familiar with everyone of those bands and the proof is going to be in the listening experience so have a read of a Drowned in Sound’s gig review:-

“Falconetti are perhaps the night’s secret success, undoubtedly being the most understated and atmospheric band. Like the act before them, this band also use delayed and reverbed guitar to full effect, but here they are matched by the brass of Neil Heywood. Again there are the usual post-rock quiet/loud/louder sections, but here the loud sections are especially epic with Nick Tonge’s down tuned, overdriven guitar-growl and the powerful rhythm section of Matt Fortune (drums) and Mark Midgley (bass). With excellent arrangements and a note perfect performance, Falconetti mix the horn augmented instrumentals of We Vs. Death with the doomgaze of Jesu.
Falconetti’s new EP Finisterre is receiving excellent reviews and the tracks with vocals are spaced out cosmic encounters. The EP features vocals by Emma Adams, programming by Tetchi, plus cellist Christopher Bryenton and violinist Katherine Betteridge and is a must for post rock fans.

"Magna Via is a great journey across landscapes of lovely reverb cliffs and lakes of delay … delicious repetitive bass lines … truly outstanding production. I was blown away, moved by the strings in Straits of Messina. It’s all fantastic. This EP is a triumph."-Mono Magazine.

Death in Public
Offer up support tonight and these are some quotes from a number of reviews:-

“With guitars as gargantuan as Mogwai and vocals with the bitchy attitude of Mansun at their anthemic best, DIP are onto a winner…" - Subba Cultcha

"The band recall the joys of Sonic Youth but add a nice British touch to the formula. Massive sounding guitars and atmosphere." - Comfort Comes

"Reverb Drenched guitars give way to tender melodies and the vocals float across proceedings with just enough malice evident." - Die Shellsuit, Die!

"Guitar notes ring out like ghostly anthems separated by incidentally massive walls of noise. A pulsating melee of shaking distortion." - Manchester Music

"Death In Public provide sinister, brooding verses punctuated by
frightening guitar noise. Some excellent ideas. " - Leeds Music Scene

"Death In Public live in a reverb world of fiery guitars and echoing doom. The band mix Godspeed style guitars mixed with doomy backdrops and atmospherics laden with thudding drums and impassioned vocals.." - Plastic Ashtray

"Wired darkness runs through spikey guitar lines, keeping a balance between fast pace and brooding sentiment. There's a post-rock power here that dullards like Keane and Razorlight could never understand." - Moderate Rock

"They’re all about big sound and blustery atmospherics, but do this with a pleasing lack of portentousness. (opening with I Really Hate Coldplay) Instead, they keep up a sharp pace and motor through their short set." - New Noise

"Atmospheric guitars wash across sound creating (whisper it) sonic cathedrals. Sounding like an angrier Muse, strings are thrashed with the passion of a band clearly trying to create something interesting. There is a passion in the vocals Kele Okereke could only manage in his dream of dreams...." - Click Music

Hot Bone

All you need to know about this duo is that their set is stunning!

The Christophers

“There's a delightful cynicism about their lyrics and some killer hooks and beats. Add to that some sturdy assertive basslines, demonically absrasive guitar parts and the precision beat of a drum machine underpinning staccato near-robotic vocals, and overall you get something which takes in rather a lot of 1979 (specifically The Fall, A Certain Ratio, Wire and Talking Heads) and dumps it squarely in 2007 (there are bits where if you close your eyes it actually might be LCD Soundsystem). Scary bastards you can dance to - we like them very much, and suspect we will be seeing a lot more of them.”-Manchestermusic.com
Manchestermusic.com also made their release “Demo of the Week” and you can’t ask for much better than that.

Oh and it's at the Retro Bar, 78 Sackville Street, Manchester M1 3NJ not far from Oxford Road and about 5 minutes walk from Piccadilly Station.
