"Wading through the Deptford rubble,looking for the right kind of trouble" sing dirty new wave punk, The Skuzzies, in Shotgun Romance, a track on this summer's EP release. When Pete Doherty asked them to play the notorious Babyshambles Astoria riot in December 2004, they won over a fractious sell-out strong crowd (not bad for one of their first gigs), before mysteriously vanishing after taking the night bus to Deptford.
The Skuzzies songwriter and frontman, Jerome Alexandre, who grew up in the area, sites the area as a source of inspiration; " Deptford is both ugly and beautiful, that's what makes it so fascinating. The parks, the council flats, the river, the poverty and the prosperity. It's like an undiscovered film set, a concrete backdrop to people's lives."
After the Astoria, two years of homelessness, squat life hard times followed then front-man-with-front, Jerome Alexandre, resurrected the band and in early 2007 they recorded a demo with Strokes producer Gordon Raphael who described The Skuzzies as ’The best new band in London in the last five years’.
On the strength of these songs, they signed to punk label, Framingo, and began this year hailed by Artrocker magazine as a band to watch out for. Gritty songs, simultaneously unique and universal, come to life at shows which are excitingly antagonistic.
Managed by Johnny Thunders friend and biographer, Nina Antonia, this band are as real as they come. They've played with The Noisettes, Metro Riots and Towers of London, are receiving radio play in The USA, Germany, France, Spain and Italy. The time has come for the UK to sit up and take note.
