CALVIN JOHNSON
calvin johnson’s work in underground culture started back in the early days of punk as a teenage fan volunteering at the local community radio station, KAOS-FM in olympia washington. he moved on to establish the legendary K records in 1982 and has been at the heart of truly independent music and art in the USA ever since. through K, and in-house dub narcotic studios, he has worked with a host of influential artists including beck, make up, built to spill, modest mouse, the blow, kimya dawson, heavenly, the microphones, jon spencer blues explosion and the gossip amongst others.
his distinctive voice and idiosyncratic stage presence (including signature dance moves such as ‘the tummy hop’) have gained him friends and fans around the world for his bands beat happening, go team, halo benders, dub narcotic sound system and most recently calvin johnson and the sons of the soil.
the decade of the double zeroes has seen calvin johnson set out into the world, acoustic guitar in hand, as a solo artist. deadpan, playful, romantic and confrontational in turn; his live performances in the UK are few and far between.
LIANNE HALL
lianne hall is a musician from brighton with a voice and style immediately familiar in its gentle captivating warmth, yet who conveys an emotional depth and integrity that's completely unique in it's range and beauty. lianne's take on country/folk music is sparse, uncluttered and direct, with a raw honesty inherent of her long standing involvement in DIY punk rock. her songs brim with fragile confidences and open confession; an offering of weary candour, 'digging deep / i'm cleaned out / here's everything / i own'.
at times melancholic and aching, the longing that pounds at the heart of the best country music beats louder than drums when she sings. and yet it's the effortlessness, almost nonchalance, that draws you into the shade of her voice, and is part of the reason why john peel (for whom lianne recorded five sessions, including a live christmas special at peel acres) called her 'one of the great english voices'.
THE MOUNTAIN PARADE
the mountain parade hail from oxford and bristol and feature members of little cosmonaut and roxanne:theearlyyears. evoking 60's kitchensink bubblegum and perfect pastoral pop, they create sweetist minimalist folk where words and instruments (though there are many, including ukuele, clarinet, trumpet, melodica, harmonium, oboe and various percussion) are used sparingly to create precise yet shambolic pop masterpieces - the kind that the kids of bristol do so well (think IKIHNC, freeze puppy, my two toms, lacuna, fránçois, etc). this will be their first bristol show.
