i bought the first album and listened to it a handfull of times but was largely unmoved. it's alright i thought. i hear it played out at gigs and crappy indie clubs quite a lot and i really don't have strong feelings about it either way. "s'alright" i thought.

when the new album came out i read a few reviews then came across a thead on an slightly muso-heavy alt-country biased forum i frequent where it was being absolutely slammed by a bunch of people who's opinion i usually vaguely concur with which surprised me. i mean they really HATED it with a ferocity that i found rather baffling.

then my electro pop and heavy rock loving mate played it for me it whilst going on about how AMAZING it was. he said he didn't like the first album at all but this was far more immediate and epic. all i could think was "wow that's funny - it sounds a lot less epic and immediate than the first album and i'm bored by these clips let along the whole thing"

my buddy also pointed out an alarming similarity to bruce springsteen in several places. he's right too!

i really hate bruce springsteen.

i have no idea what my opinion of it is really. an overwhelming "meh" and general wonderment at how such a seemingly ordinary album could have caused such a kerfuffle.

Excellent review Westie - one of the best I've had the pleasure of reading on this site for some time (blimey, you don't often hear me praising one of our chin stroking hacks very often - don't let it go to your head young man).

Haven't heard the offending disc yet, was toying with the idea of picking it up later this week but now you've saved me a few quid. I owe you a pint!

sorry i didn't mean to turn this into a post about oasis, damn four in the morning posts! all i meant was i felt let down by the band really more than the record company because i truly believed them when they said they were something new and special and i didn't feel they really had the passion for the music they claimed to after a couple of albums. anyway, back to arcade fire. i still think they're a great band, i loved funeral. but yeah this second album seems a bit contrived. all the things that made the first album great, the passion and the energy, all seem a bit flat on the second album. it's like they've tried to recreate the feeling of the first album for the sake of making an album, not because they genuinely feel passionate about anything in paticular. just my opinion though.
