cavey, in answer to your earlier question, he most certainly didn't say that immigration outright was a bad thing. he even agree at one stage that it does in a way enrich society. he just doesn't wouldn't like to live in england because he doens't think it's what it used to be. a statement that, while i truly and honestly do not agree with, i don't really think is in any way dangerous. in this debate, no one seems to have grasped that of course australians, americans and lots of other english speaking white speaking people could come under the category of immigrants. so using the word racism is frankly ridiculous. xenophobia is the word everyone's looking for. while i don't condone xenophbia or think it's necessarily any better than racism, that is what's really being discussed here. and for the record, these aren't even xenophobic views! that would include saying you don't like going to other countries also because there are too many foreign people, which is not what morrissey says or believes, otherwise why would live in italy? it's not the fear of any other race, it's the (completely unfounded) fear of losing his youth. also, i don't think the argument that people only defend him because he's morrissey holds true. i think william yeats is a great poet, but under no circumstances would i ever defend his support for mussolini or expressions that he wished europe to be ruled by a totalitarian state. and obviously if morrissey had said that i wouldn't be defending him either!

I still reckon the important issue here is not what Morrissey may or may not personally believe regarding immigration/race but about the nature of debate in this country regarding the matter. We will never have a proper debate in this country about race when all it takes is one man to say something slightly off-beam for the media to go completely hysterical. This is why the issue is seen as a “hot potato” and why no high profile figure would go anywhere near it.

Instead, its not talked about at all – or only in very stage-managed terms, which leaves it open to be hijacked by people like the BNP. If the level of debate in mainstream politics on this issue was in any way adequate, the BNP would be an obscure marginalised mob of right-wing skinheads. Instead they can legitimately claim to be addressing a very important issue that mainstream politics is wilfully ignoring because of fear of mis- representation. It sucks
