Had an email yesterday concerning a gig that The Nuns are playing at Shunt Vaults on April 18th. Amongst other things it said that the promoter was looking for another female band to complete the line-up. I often find that I like all female bands, not least because they seem more likely than all male bands to do something that is in some way uniquely their own rather than merely imitate an already existing successful band. However, I am somewhat stumped as to being able to offer any suggestions. I like The Micragirls and The Boonaaaaras are pretty good too, but both bands are based in mainland Europe, so coming to London for a one off date is probably not economically viable. The USA and Japan also seems to have some good female bands (The Husbands, Finally Punk, the 5678s etc), but as far as the UK is concerned the best that I can come up with is Pens, Sisters Of Transistors, Wetdog and The (no longer all female) Priscillas.
I love The Luv'd Ones, Kleenex, A-Lines, Slits, Manic Cough, Raincoats and several other all female bands, but who are today's equivalents, particularly in the UK? Even mixed sex bands with more than one female member seem a little thin on the ground; Shrag are ok, Wolfie were good but seem to be on permanent hold while the individual members do other projects, Two Tears is / are fantastic, but is / are based abroad.
There seems to be a lot of very successful female solo acts about at the moment, but not many all female groups. Is this just a failure on my part to seek them out? Are there great all female bands out there that just aren't getting the exposure that they deserve?
If any one can recommend some good all female groups, particularly UK based ones, I'd like to hear them and maybe the people at Shunt would too.
