I still hope it can be saved. But I doubt it will.

Not good news, really, for small bands, music fans, small labels.

I do wonder where the legacy of Peel Sessions are going to go? As in, new sessions for new or unusual bands. This was probably one of the best things the BBC used to do. Who will do it now?

Likewise, hope it can be saved, the only reason to have a DAB radio.

How on earth is 1Extra justified when you look at the following stats

and remember that dance music is probably more represented than any other type on the airwaves...?

I guess it's justified on a demographic, being officially aimed at black youth. Seems pointless, given that black music culture is totally the mainstream of popular music.

Are they closing the station because it has low listening figures?

It'll be interesting to see the figures if Radio 1 was DAB/internet only. Who listens to it anyway?? not the kids I know - they get all their sounds from the web.

Maybe they can improve Radio 2, to take up some of the what Radio 6 offers currently.

From a selfish label point of view, I'm not sure it if matters, really. I mean, we get the odd play from 6Music and sometimes R1, but it doesn't affect sales unless the band gets multiple plays and a few sessions as well.

On a site note, i've been doing accounts analysis for SPC and discovered that our income from distribution halved in the last year, but website sales took up most of the slack.

Maybe a similar thing will happen with radio play. 10,000 people miss a song on 6music but 10,000 more discover the song online, 'cos 6music isn't there to guide their indie tastes anymore?

..and there'll be loads of indie radio pluggers looking for new jobs. But given they're 99% Hoxton fins, no worries there.

Nice to see the BBC showing a colossal lack of backbone in an election year by removing stuff that gave them credit but not listeners. And yet they keep BBC3…

In a way it’s unsurprising. After Peel died the BBC claimed that he was one of their greatest broadcasters but if you look at how they messed him around for years, you can see that they didn’t understand what they had until it’s gone.

I’ve been disappointed by XfM’s Exposure, which seems to focus exclusively on guitar bands and what's big in Shoreditch but John Kennedy himself appears to be a good guy. Maybe this will give him a bit of leverage with his bosses to make his show a bit more daring.

There's an awful lot of unhappiness about this across the media and the internet, maybe with enough people complaining there might be a slim chance of saving it?

Also aren't the BBC, as a public service broadcaster, obliged to offer services to cater for those of us who want to listen to new music that isn't just a continous stream of R&B, even if we are in a minority (of 650,000!!!)?

If I actually listened to 6 Music more than once every few months I might be more annoyed by this but I just don't listen to the radio much full stop. I still think it's a very wanky decision though. It seems there are other BBC stations covering styles of music that are already catered for on the major channels and so much more worthy of the chop imo.

D'oh! Although the station frequently annoys me, it's still a long way ahead of the competition, and I'm not looking forward to searching for something listenable once it's gone.

On the plus side, it's one less job for George Lamb, and that has to be a good thing.

And a daft Tory shadow culture secretary flip flopping over whether he thinks it should be shut down or not... Bearing in mind BBC are only doing all these cuts in readiness for the Tories it's an interesting twist.

<crosses fingers>
