"Flog It!" regularly uses tracks by The Butthole Surfers and Anal Cunt as beds these days. Well, no, it doesn't, but it can't be too far off. I'm sure they'll get round to it as soon as they recover from their current Ting Tings obsession.

A song I wrote was presented to an ad company for a chocolate advert, but it didn't get picked. I'd have been more than happy to have said song whored our for hard cash, given that I'm usually fucking skint.

I see no reason why bands shouldn't get renumeration for their work, just like everyone else.

I don't much mind the artists taking the $$$. The annoying thing for me is that they're getting the chance, ie ad companies reckon (and doubtless they're right) that using Venus in Furs/Atmosphere/[insert much-loved classic track here] will help sell some bit of tat. The music has been assimilated without being understood, and that's a sad thing to witness.

It's an interesting debate. In principle, I don't mind an artist making money from their music where the music is used sympathetically, which doesn't happen that often (Detroit Cobras Cha Cha Twist was OK in a clothing(?) ad). And when I interviewed Piney, she told me that the ad agency actually commissioned her to sing White Wedding, so that's one instance where they did some good. Where I don't like music in ads is where:

I feel strongly about the song and don't want the images it creates in my head to be replaced by ones for beer or sanitary protection products; or

it's an example of cool-by-association;

it's wrong. Selling Victoria's Secrets thongs with a Dylan song is just not on.
