I thought the competition was generally entertaining (TV pundits notwithstanding). Webb refereed the final pretty well, given that the Dutch tactics were to play total contact football (van Marwijk must have shown them Rollerball the night before). As de Jong and Bommel are the heart of Holland’s formation, sending them off would have wrecked any sense of this as a contest. Instead Webb gave us a pretty intense and nerve-racking football for nearly 120 minutes, which was the right decision. He’s only second in the English contribution to the World Cup after that octopus.

EDIT:The burning question now is when will the Dutch shut up and admit they tried to cheat their way to the title? Not only did Sunday bury the idea of "total voetbal", the Dutch crimped out a brown snake in the grave to prevent anyone from resurrecting it. No wonder Cryuff is so angry!
