Loved The Lyceum. 4 or 5 bands on the night; a top band headlining and a succession of bands each a little better know than the on before, leading up to a big name headliner. Never get bills as good as these any more!
Particular memories:
Someone getting stabbed at an Only Ones gig, police were called and let the crowd out one at a time; took several hours.
The Cramps (Psychedelic Jungle era)
Fire Engines supporting (I think) The Teardrop Explodes.
Buzzcocks
The Birthday Party supporting Bauhaus
Magazine + D.A.F.
U2 supporting Echo & The Bunnymen. U2 were shit even then, The Bunnymen weren't great either; bottom of the bill Au Pairs (before they degenerated into a lame white funk band) blew both the big names off stage. Think Delta 5 were on that bill too.
Duran Duran playing bottom of the bill to John Cooper Clarke & Pauline Murray & The Invisible Girls
Blah Blah Blah dressed as show jumpers, playing a monotonous drone whilst slowly bending their knees and then straightening them ad infinitum. Saw Blah Blah Blah there on another occasion too. A band very adept at winding up an audience.
Ramones doing three consecutive nights, each one at the top of their game. Could barely walk after the third night of mad jumping about.
