On a similar note I bought a few very basic early Top Trumps at a bootfair a few years ago (English Cars, German Cars, that sort of thing from about 78 I guess). Bloody hell we must have been short of hobbies back then, pitting Austin Allegros stats against Mini Clubmans...

Well no because I'm only 32. But I had similar top trumps - they were handed down from my uncle who's not that much older than me, probably about your age. My favourite was speedboats. I think hovercrafts were in the pack too.

The other day I was playing with Lego with my son. He's got the same Lego I played with as a kid, which was also handed down to me so originates in the 70s and it was great fun! He's as happy to play with lego as any computer game!

These were the best top trumps - bar none. I had the set with the black backs, my middle brother had the set with the blue backs.

I had some super hero ones. Not the same as that. They had Captain America and stuff in. They were new and not hand ne downs so would've been mid 80s.

I used to collect all those PG tips cards. At my middle school in Poole (as opposed to the junior I left in Manchester before my family left for better weather and poorer footy) we all played "fag cards". It was a really odd game involving either propping up a card (or cards) and trying to flick other cards at it to knock it (or them) down and then winning all losing cards that failed to knock it down or flicking cards at a wall and the first person to land on another card would win all cards on the floor. Obviously while the games always involved tea cards, we all sought to win the better cards (in my case, usually the flags or costumes of the world rather than the space exploration ones).

Interesting reading about cards/stickers.

My favourites as a kid (mid to late 80's) were Panini football sticker books, and the awesome 'Garbage Pail Kids', which looking back was actually very subversive and funny.

We used to buy those packets of sweets that were like mini cigarettes. Not sure if you remember them, they're probably banned now because of that very reason. They were white sticks in a fag style packet and they used to come with football cards in. We'd all get a packet a lunch times and them challenge each other to name the players on the cards.
