The audience for no-definitive-article 1990s are “lovely”, the stage is “lovely”, everything’s “lovely” to Jackie McKeown, though I think he’d draw the line at the dry ice. The band combine the verve of the Velvets, Television and the Dolls with the brio of Bowie and, for sure, it’s not new but it’s as perfectly presented as you’d expect from a couple of ex-members of Yummy Fur and a V-Twinn-er (and if Bobby Gillespie can get this far with his careful re-presentation of the cooler bits of his record collection, Jackie M certainly can). In ‘Cult Figure’ they have a screamalong anthem, and they cause the crowd to explode into motion (not easy in the Water Rats) for ‘You’re Supposed to Be My Friend’, but at the same time, some of the songs ooze a dark musicality (‘Jingle Bells’) that demand Tom Verlaine-style guitar heroics. Expect these cult figures to go supernova when the album’s released.
Bricolage are the sound of young Scotland reborn and take something from the look too, judging by the spectacular knitwear they’re wearing tonight. Like other Scottish bands, they draw inspiration from post-punk but theirs comes from the sultry end of Orange Juice and the like, with Byrds-style jangly guitars (and a hint of Johnny Marr in the mix) plus soulful rhythms. Debut single ‘Footsteps’ makes an offer to take you to the dancefloor that you can’t refuse while new single ‘Looting Takes The Waiting Out of Wanting’ has a insistent, chiming, charming twang. This is shiny pop with dance and indie music in perfect proportions.
The Moths are a stylish trio playing drum-machine-powered electro-pop, as captivating on the ear as they are on the eye. They’re still developing their Moth-ness (emerging from their chrysalis) and singer James Fox currently has the slightly uncomfortable, slightly camp delivery of Pete Shelley circa-Homosapien, but the tunes are pretty well baked cookies of infectious powerpop. Check out single ‘Games’ on Club Fandango for recorded proof that they’re a band worth looking out for.
