It may be 5 years since their last long playing release but the time away has clearly not been wasted by the Apples and in particular their main pippin, Robert Schneider. Not only have they returned with a twenty four song strong set but there’s a definite upping of the game too. A far lusher and fuller production is evident, with layer upon layer of separate interwoven tracks; an effort that clearly must have tested the patience and energy levels of all involved. What is less apparent to these old cloth ears is that such has been the meticulousness of all this work from Schneider and co that he has even apparently managed to invent a whole new musical scale while working on the album.
Fortunately these endeavours have not been in vain; this really is a mightily impressive piece of work. The variety of instrumentation and expansive use of production techniques means the whole album veers from vibrant orchestration to shimmering powerpop in its fourteen full tracks and ten 'tween track interludes. Jokey live and studio catcalls are dropped in, vocoders used and then discarded and vocalists switched. It all makes for a fascinating experience, tapping from the past and the work of ELO, the Beatles and Pavement but at the same time being very much here, now and their own product. A truly glorious return.
