✭✭✭ Joanna Gruesome ✭✭✭ From Cardiff. Jo Gru songs are shot through with loud discordant feedback and super-fast, hardcore punk drumbeats. Debut album 'Weird Sister' sees their first foray away from recording in a living room to a proper studio under the guidance of producer MJ of the much lauded Hookworms.
They have built-up a phenomenal live reputation, blending obnoxiously loud guitars with a high energy performance dispersed with quieter reflection, boy/girl vocals and teenage angst.
✭✭✭ The Yawns ✭✭✭ Twanging guitars and irresistibly lazy hooks. The Yawns hail from Glasgow. With releases on Giant Hell and Records Records Records.
"Lead track on the debut ‘Summers Wasted’ is perhaps their best moment so far. Naïve and blissfully carefree it is as nigh on as you can possibly get to a perfect guitar pop record" - This is fake DIY
✭✭✭ The Spook School ✭✭✭ The new album from Edinburgh quartet The Spook School is due out on Fortuna POP! in October. So we're delighted they're coming down to play for Odd Box.
Inspired by the post-punk-pop of The Buzzcocks, Lou Reed’s ‘Transformer’ and the films of Buster Keaton, with a dash of 60s pop for good measure, The Spook School are Nye Todd on guitar with Adam Todd also on guitar and Anna Cory on bass, not forgetting Niall McCamley who plays drums, tells jokes and takes his clothes off. They all sing and shout and write the music together.
✭✭✭ Tyrannosaurus Dead ✭✭✭ A five piece from Brighton. Their latest release 'Pure // Apart' is a gorgeous 12" released by yours truly (Odd Box). The band were inspired by the 1st Pains of Being Pure At Heart album and they manage to mine a similar seam of noisy guitar pop.
Their earlier releases came out on the fab Reeks of Effort. Plans are afoot for an album and a compilation of early recordings in 2014. Come have your heart stolen by the most exciting band I have heard in a long, long time.
'Sadie' grabs you by the Sandra Bullocks from the off with hazy guitars melting in through crisp drums, and it doesn't let go for the whole 2 minutes 14 seconds.' - Fuzzbook
✭✭✭ Humousexual ✭✭✭ Boitel & Victor are humousexual. They live in Berlin & South London. They don't play live all that often so we're delighted they were able to do this show. Stand-up drums, jagged guitars. They are part of Odd Box's Crackle! Fuzz! Pop! singles club this year. With other releases either self released or on the fabulous Everard Records.
✭✭✭ Gum ✭✭✭ Gum are a London band. They formed in 2011 and have released records on Tiny Lights and Vinyl Junkie. They're also have a limited 7" as part of The 100 Club Series on Odd Box this year. They are currently recording their debut album which will be released on Odd Box in 2014.
The band make a whirring buzzy shoegaze inspired sound.
"'Love it! very lush sounding" - Rob Da Bank
"The best new dreampop / shoegaze I’ve heard out of the UK in a while" - Sociopaths Are Glam
✭✭✭ Owl & Mouse ✭✭✭ Owl & Mouse was born as the solo project of Australian singer-songwriter Hannah. After moving to London in 2008, Hannah taught herself to play the ukulele, and began writing vulnerable yet open-hearted folk-tinged songs, inspired by her friends, family and homes across the world. In early 2011, Hannah released her first solo EP on Haircut Records. A short while later, she began to form a more permanent, pop-oriented backing band, and now performs with Jen on backing vocals, Tom on bass, and Emma on keyboards. Owl & Mouse’s first single, ‘Canvas Bags’, is out now on Hangover Lounge Records.
✭✭✭ PAMS ✭✭✭ A scraggy pop punk explosion featuring members of Sock Puppets, The Give It Ups and The Bracelettes. Expect a release soon on Odd Box.
✭✭✭ Pet Cat ✭✭✭ Pet Cat are a three piece from Reading who play gnarly grunge tinged pop music. Their cassette release 'Wires' is a tour de force with stand out title track bristling with Dinosaur Jr-esque guitars.
✭✭✭ Mark Wynn ✭✭✭ Mark is a guitarist, songwriter and singer. He's been prolifically releasing stuff on bandcamp this year! (I can count 8 (EIGHT) new releases already this year).
✭✭✭ Object Object ✭✭✭ Another brand new band from Brighton. Making a noise somewhere between indiepop and shoegaze. Singer Aimee Montague has a distinctive voice. They should be a cracking band to kick off the Obzine all dayer.
After the bands we'll attempt to have a pop-punk disco thing. With dancing.
Guest DJs: Pop-O-Matic and Fall Out Make Up.
