This could be an interesting and controversial one...



1) Archduke Franz Ferdinand (1914)
Reason: Inadvertently led to the start of WW1 which shaped most major military action for the rest of the century.



2) The Russian royal family (1917)
Reason: Led to the Bolsheviks taking control and setting up the Soviet Union as it remained for almost the rest of the century. Also saw the abolition of other royal houses such as the Kaiser, all who whom are inter-related. Somehow ours got off with it.



3) JFK (1963)
Reason: At the time it was feared (rightly, as JFK went against the US's wishes over the Bay Of Pigs and Cuban missile crisis) that this would lead to nuclear war. It also proves that even the president of the USA isn't the man in the driving seat. Lyndon B Johnson and the CIA were behind the plot.



4) Lee Harvey Oswald (1963)
Reason: He simply knew too much. He'd been a "Manchurian candidate" in all of this but he had to go to prevent awkward questions being asked at his trial, as the world was told he was the guy who shot JFK. He didn't, but he did fire shots that day as a decoy.



5) Martin Luther King (1968)
Reason: The man who inspired this list. Led to race riots across the USA and showed that even though change had come, it was nowhere near enough and that white racists didn't want a black man trying to get equal pay for a lesser race (which is what he'd been doing in the days previous). Possibly this one is about symbolism as much as the politics leading up to it.



There are some famous ones I left out, but I'm sure people will add those and subtract mine with better reasons or whatever. By the way, I know a hell of a lot about the Kennedy stuff because, believe it or not, I'm actually (very) distantly related through my Grandad who I recently mentioned in another thread. So every conspiracy story and whatever I've heard and studied a million times, and I'm 99% certain I know what happen on Nov 22nd.

I'd maybe consider the assassination of Robert Kennedy to be a contender for this list. Robert Kennedy had shown a willingness to take on organised crime in a way the JFK was afraid to do, probably because of his knowledge of how his family's wealth and power had stemmed form his own father Joseph Kennedy's links to organised crime. Following the assassination of his brother, the younger Kennedy had maybe become more willing to stand against the mob, despite his family history.
It's all conjecture, but maybe Robert Kennedy, had he become President, would have had a more profound legacy than JFK, had he not been killed.
Also would consider Benazir Bhutto and Mahatma Gandhi.

JFK was shot from a drain below the side of the road by a CIA agent. That's why the bullet goes up through his head and not down as it would had Oswald done it. This drain - if you walked a few miles - emptied out into a river and that was the escape route.

By drain - imagine the kerb at the side of the road - there's an opening about an inch and a half height, a couple of foot long, in the exact spot he was shot. It's there to this day.

LBJ had already called before the killing (this is proven) to say that Oswald should be labelled a lone assassin and had worked for Castro, neither was true.

Kennedy fired members of the Warren commission which turned them against him. Cord Meyer (CIA) has his girlfriend (Jackie) taken by JFK. The government weren't happy about having a celebrity president anyway, let alone one with a reputation as a womaniser and wouldn't cooperate with their every wish.

To prove further that JFK was hated by the US authorities because of his style of presidency and his objective of peace over gain and not falling into the whole "new world order" plans I'd need to check up on some facts. It's too complex to go off the top of my head on that one.

Well, firstly - can we leave the Kennedy debate for another time because it'll end up taking over the thread? And yes there are lots of theories, but I know which ones I believe, and listing every bit of evidence for each of them is going to be strenuous and potentially dull.

I thought about including Gandhi in my list too by the way instead of Martin Luther King.

I guess the Tsar was "killed" rather than "assassinated" but it still fits the thread I think.

What it doesn't explain it that we all know there seem to be more bullet holes than shots fired. Well if shots had already been fired (which I believe they had but not directly at JFK) there would be extra commotion and noise. Also the close proximity of the car to the drain and the fact that a silenced weapon was used from underground would have made this fatal shot much more difficult to actually hear. There's a lot more info out there but like I said it'll get boring and speculative if we keep going over facts. This goes part way to explaining where I believe he was killed from. As for who did it, I don't think there's any chance the CIA would EVER let that be known.

JFK – the lack of transparency and uncertainty has created a conspiracy theory industry (see also UFOs and 9/11) for people to invent a story! Do we think that the CIA, given its track record, could commit the perfect crime and hide it for 50 years? As Milchman says, JFK had lots of enemies.

MLK – agree that this one is significant for the profile of the person they killed, though it’s part of a whole series of assassinations of leaders of the civil rights movement.

Other significant assassinations – maybe President Habyarimana of Rwanda (resulted in the death of 800,000-1m), Reinhard Heydrich (5,000 killed, 15,000 arrested, made allies think twice about assassination policy), John Lennon and Malcolm X.

JFK - had so many enemies but I think personally it was an inside job - I only say this because at the crucial moment of contact, his crew looking after him stepped down from the vehicle leaving him a sitting duck - until that moment his security entourage were practically having sex with him.

Can I just add that the JFK assasination is definitely the most talked about one - a new film out again about it. It's embedded in us. Not sure if that makes it the most important but it's the one people most argue over/discuss.

"Bush" seems to have a different hairline in the Dallas photo to in the picture of Bush with Nixon. This is maybe more telling than the two people wearing similar clothes and both standing with their hands in their pockets.
If you've not already read it Kev, may I recommend The Kennedy Conspiracy by Anthony Summers as a reasoned analysis of the known facts, with no hidden agenda; definitely the best book I've read on the subject, although it hasn't been updated since 1998 and probably should be. I also recommend Summers biography of Nixon, The Arrogance Of Power and Sons & Brothers by Richard D. Mahoney, which is an excellent biography of both JFK & Robert Kennedy.
