So they’re leaving earth – if they’re heading for Venus they’ll get a big shock as it has a large carbon dioxide atmosphere with clouds of sulphuric acid and atmospheric pressure at surface level of 92 times the earth, utterly incapable of supporting life. They’re not going to get much of a welcome. It’s also 41m km from Earth so if they travel “so many light years” they’ll have missed their turning and have to come back. Finding things – do they know how big space is? And how do you stand tall in space? You lose bone mass and muscles because of the lack of gravity so it’s more likely you’ll end up as a blob of flesh with broken bones.

Don’t heavy metallers do any research?

Tjinder Singh (apologies if the spelling is wrong) from Cornershop openly refers to himself as a coon in interviews.

It's like the whole Spurs "Yid" thing. IMO offensive terms like that shouldn't be used. You can't have one rule for some people and one for the other. I'm not happy about half the rap songs being made using the N-word. It's offensive. Don't use it, even if you are the particular race/religion that it was first coined as a term of abuse for. Get rid of the words altogether, let them fade totally from use and that way they're less likely to be used as terms of abuse against you. Wipe the slate clean so kids don't hear them and don't know that they can be as offensive as they are. The annoying paradox is that the more you clamp down on something, the more extremists will use it and more power will be added to it. But eventually they'll go away. Even if it takes 50 years.

I've got no beef with the bag part of the song - but crashing the car into the bridge and watching it burn? Now if it was his car that's fine (there would be a risk of death but we will allow it for the sake of lyrics). But 'My' car - oh yeah, you've really hurt him, crashing your own car into a bridge and letting it burn - then she says, 'I love it'. No remorse, nothing. She's stoopid.

Also they only ever play the 'I don't care I love it' snippet of the song on ads an' all - because when you find out what she loves, you think, 'What a gobshite'.

You're right - Yid is from Yiddish so wasn't originally a term or abuse. But nigger comes from negro so maybe that wasn't initially too. Either way - both ARE now. So by repeating them over and over, particularly the sheer amount of times nigger is used in rap has gone WAY beyond that initial way of confronting racial hatred. I got 99 rap songs that use the word just for the sake of its use. Not for political reasons. That's what I don't like about these terms. They can be used to confront the subject, but they're not really any more. And personally I don't think there's a place for any of them.

The exception would be gay, which was often used as abuse. There are far more offensive terms for gay people that I never want to hear. But the meaning of gay has changed in that respect. Saying Stephen Fry is gay isn't abusive at all. Calling him a fag or whatever is.

There's the playground use of the word - "that's so gay!" - which seems to be totally separate from anything to do with homosexuality, although I don't really like it being used in that way either to be honest.

Apologies - I did know they were in both versions. This song was actually used as an example of cleaning up songs for wider audiences on my course and it looked at it in some depth. The reason the seafood line was left in appears to be that they simply didn't think anyone would get the meaning. And not many did to be honest.

I only read the last post in the topic so I missed the brief discussion beforehand.
