Trev, i'd take everything I say with a pinch of salt lake city - there was a time when I thought that the sun and moon were the same body - that when it became dark it was because the sun had turned its back on us - I wouldn't pay too much attention to anything that falls from my mouth.

Beckham, Rooney and Cole are world class players.You could probably find loads of dedications to them regarding that fact. For the past couple of games England have returned to their 'watch from behind a pillow' best - but i'm kidding myself and saying it's because it's friendlies.

Scholes, Rooney, A. Cole, Gazza, Shearer, Rio, Campbell and Beckham were all (and in Rooney's case, still is) world class players without a doubt.

Gerrard at his peak would be just outside that bracket for me, but it's certainly arguable he was world class in the mid noughties.

Scholes, Rooney, Gazza were/are more gifted players than Gareth Bale.

I'm someone who rates Bale as a world class player and wanted him at United, but the surreal fee that Spurs (thankfully) coaxed out of Real for him isn't indicative of his actual level (which is still very high).

I don't rate Rooney at all. Every time I watch him I see poor passes and pretty workman-like performances.

Gazza yep, Scholes yep.

Oh yeah, Bale's price was silly and he's got a long way to go before he could claim to be an all time great.

Shearer was a great forward, but he wasn't even the best forward in his own era.....

Rio/Campbell I need convincing on. They were great players, but were they really in the best 3 or 4 players in the world in their position at any given time?

Beckham was never world class. Loads of effort and a great dead ball does not make you a 'world beater'.

If all these players were World Class England should have won something considering a fair few played at the same time.

Lineker was a world class finisher and probably does count. He just sneaks in the time frame I mentioned too.

Owen? Great player once upon a time. World Class? Don't think so....

Seaman is a good shout - he was also the last very good keeper England had - so yeah I'll probably go with that one.

Shearer was undoubtedly a world class player. World class doesn't mean 'single best player on Earth in given position'.

Wayne Rooney is a phenomenal footballer and definitely world class, in a weird way he's almost under-rated (or perhaps over hated) by British football fans (Utd fans included). When he retires and a little more objectivity is gained by looking back at his trophy haul/highlight reel, it'll become clear to all.

Beckham was definitely world class. His dead-ball ability and glossy public image overshadows his passing ability, vision, defensive abilities and penetration (ooer). He was a beast of a player, world class for sure.

Rio and Sol definitely spent 3 seasons as world class players.

Just because Gareth Bale's the world's most expensive player, it doesn't inherently make him one of the world's best players Trev! We all know how botched the finances of football are. The history of the world's most expensive player are littered with all time greats like Gianluigi Lentini, Denilson and Hernan Crespo.

Speaking of world class players - the last British recipient of that Ballon D'Or thing was Michael Owen. In 2005 Lampard and Gerrard finished 2nd and 3rd behing Ronaldinho. Shearer finished 3rd in 1996.

Didn't see any Welsh fellas in there until the mighty John Charles way back in '59. Although admittedly he's so highly regarded he may well have been a better player than all of the above.

To be fair, it's not my opinion that they are WC. I'm just going on the consensus of the posters in this thread.

I still think the only truly world class player England have had since 1990 - is Paul Gascoigne.
