Brilliant! Really sweet, really funny and just a great feel good movie.

The Lives of Others - Not remotely new but brilliant German film set in the pre-Wall tumbling East and the power and methods of the Stasi.

Cosmopolis - New Cronenberg film. Appalling movie with ridiculous pretentious dialogue and confusing plot. Stay in and watch the kettle boil instead.

Joseph Gordon Levitt plays the young Bruce Willis who kills people sent back in time. Bruce Willis comes back in time but knocks his young self out & escapes in order to kill the person who sent him back when the person was a little boy. I loved it.

The Imposter

There's nothing I can write that will convey the feeling of WTF that you get watching this documentary. I highly recommend it.

Tense and gripping true story about the hostage situation in Iran 79/80 focusing on 6 Americans who hid at the Canadian embassy. Really good.

Good Vibrations

Haven't posted in this thread for ages, but thought this one might be of interest to some of you.
It's the story of Terri Hooley and the Good Vibrations record shop and label.
It's very engaging although there are several minor weaknesses (the people playing the bands are all several years older than the people they are playing, Fergal Sharkey is portrayed as the leader of The Undertones, when really it was the O'Neil brothers' band, there's a few dodgy wigs, the bloke playing John Peel is abysmal), but these are all minor quibbles.
Richard Dormer gives a lively performance as the gutsy but foolhardy Hooley, the other performances are a bit of a mixed bag.
Despite it's weaknesses it is well worth catching, my only serious criticism is that, considering Good Vibrations only released records by no more than a couple of dozen bands, it's a shame more of them don't feature on the soundtrack; Protex, Ruefrex and Bears all were surely worthy of inclusion. Stiff Little Fingers, on the other hand, who never recorded for the label get two songs on the soundtrack.
For those of you put off by the prices at the Curzon (where the working class are only welcome if they're up on the screen, being directed by Ken Loach), there are showings at the Riverside on 27th & 28th of this month, where it is screening as part of a double bill with What Richard Did (not seen that, but it's meant to be good) and showings at the ICA on the 26th & 28th (the one on the 26th is in screen two, which I don't recommend).

Basically Johnny Moped

Documentary about the irrepressible one off maverick punk rocker from Croydon.
Saw this at Koko last night, followed by a live performance form Johnny Moped.
Full of great footage and wonderful anecdotes. One of the great untold stories of punk rock.
Very highly recommended.

<b>Spike Island</b>

Ok romp through the build up and experience to the famous Stone Roses gig via the eyes of a bunch of doting Manc fans in a baggy band. Nicely captures the thrills of youth and music fandom, as well as Manc working class culture but a few too many implausible and irritating plotline short cuts.

The Armstrong Lie
No sex except for Armstrong's intense love affair with himself. Most of the footage centres on his '09 comeback spliced with post doping revelation contrition, which never once veers close to sincerity. Compelling in its own head-scratching way.

Enough Said
James Gandolfini in his last big screen role ably assisted by the ever watchable Julia Louis-Dreyfus in their pursuit of middle-age love. And not a glimpse of Meryl to be had anywhere. Thank fuck. Lovely in a bittersweet sorta way.
