We've had animal lists before but not dogs. Milchman may wish to submit a top 100 again, but I'll keep it to 5.

Rules - dogs, hounds, pooches, puppies, specific breeds of dog or songs written about dogs in general. So fairly broad.

1) The Beatles - Hey Bulldog
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bb3RYt_rso

One of their most overlooked songs. Absolute corker.

2) Mercury Rev - Goddess on a Highway
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1xJbEoc5sDw

For those that don't know - Jonathan Donahue was in a car on the highway and looked across at the car in the next lane. Out of the passenger window was a dog who'd stuck her head out to enjoy the breeze of travelling at such speed. So the "Goddess" was actually a dog!

3) The Stooges - I Wanna Be Your Dog
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BJIqnXTqg8I

4) Super Furry Animals - Golden Retriever
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GNB3WWkNVhM

5) Gorky's Zygotic Mynci - Poodle Rockin'
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SfvoDfY8HhE

Even a top 5 is wasting people's time. There is only one song about a dog anyone needs.

I deliberately left out Hound Dog, but if I'd picked it I'd have gone for the Elvis version. Not sure I know any of the others you've mentioned! Although I expect I'd know the Sly Stone one if I heard it (have no sound at the sec).

The Sly Stone one is a demo version of a song that he later recorded with The Family Stone, although the demo is very different . It's also been covered by The Dirtbombs.

Should have maybe included this ultra raw cover of The Stooges as an alternative to the original:

Mr Airplane Man ... I Wanna Be Your Dog
https://play.spotify.com/album/4HzNi6dakeVo7gZS2E8arT

Horrible feeling I'm not going to stop myself of thinking of dog songs for the rest of the week!

Same here! Whilst attempting to fall asleep last night a glaringly obvious song came into my head. Typically, I've forgotten what it was now! It wasn't Who Let The Dogs Out? though...

I had another 20 or so going through my head by the time I dropped off to sleep last night; all good. Won't bother listing them all, but these ones are all particularly worthy of mention:

I thought I had another then - but you've already posted it - Rufus Thomas

Nick Drake - Black Eyed Dog

also - Martha My Dear was written about Paul's dog apparently.

Again - how could I forget Hounds Of Love? And El Perro Del Mar even means Dog Of The Sea and I didn't even think of her!

The most 'commercially successful' song I've ever put out was a song written about a German Shepherd dog of mine who died suddenly at age 2 and a half. This was back in my very early 20's.

In my adult life I've always kept German Shepherd dogs - this year being the only year I've been 'dogless' so to speak - I don't feel right without a dog by my side! I like them better than I like most people!

Anyway, surely this has to be the winner...
