Hoping to stay awake for it.

I'm sure they'll show it again.

Quick scroll through the program guide shows another showing 00.50 Thursday morning. Have set the recorder thing.

I dropped off in the last 10 mins or so, but unless there was some big reveal that it was all an artifice etc at the end I thought it was all a thoroughly uninteresting whiny non-event.

The interesting bit is that it got made at all, which just seems to be the band indulging a man-child younger sibling. How come, for a film about a bloke who is invited along as a roadie and decides to take a camera to shoot a film (with merely annoying consequences), there are so many (higher res) shots of him using said camera/tracking him as wanders off in a sulk?

Don't hold yer breath Milchy.

It was far from the genuflection I was expecting, or Bryce Dressner for that matter. I chuckled loudly as his po-faced annoyance.

Yeah, the "authenticity" was somewhat inauthentic, and I won't disagree with those who thought they were had. But for all that, I enjoyed it. It was inadvertently hilarious in places, and I think the dynamic and divergence between the brothers' respective outlook and efforts were beyond manipulation.

Hold your breath till your decide for yourself, milchman.

Can't argue with your arched brow at the director credit. I can't understand why none of the interviewers during the publicity tour posed this obvious question.

Haven't seen much myself lately. I thought A Most Wanted Man was a mediocre espionage thriller at best, but Philip Seymour Hoffman the most intriguing presence on the screen as usual.

Saw '71 just this weekend. I fear the poster of a tooled up teen in a British Army uniform will risk turning folk off; Troubles related films are hardly renowned for their entertainment value. But this is a refreshing take that could be filmed in any reasonably known conflict zone really. The politics are the mere background to the central nail-biting action that centres on a squaddie getting left behind enemy lines after his comrades leg it from a hairy battle with the locals. Potentially one for the end of year lists. Plus it contains one of my now favourite film quotes of all time: "Posh cunts telling thick cunts to kill poor cunts". Courtesy of Richard Dormer's rational do-gooder character. We last saw his talent in 'Good Vibrations'.

Oh and due to bad timing, I had to settle for Gone Girl rather than the Nick Cave show I wanted to see (anyone see this?). There I was thinking it was just another 3 point 5 star disposable bit of drama, albeit an overly-long one that sagged in the middle. I subsequently discover it is a slice of controversial misogyny from the incorrigible Fincher. I don't know whether it's a low point for controversy or misogyny.

Ah right. Gotcha. I hear it's mostly Nick on Nick. In Brighton. One for the diehards nonetheless.

I also hear Biophilia is the business. That and Obvious Child on me wish list for the next few weeks.

My fella reckoned Nothing Can Hurt Me was brilliant. It's the doc on Big Star. Mind you, he thinks anything with a contribution from Teenage Fan is a masterpiece. That reminds me. To the cover version thread I swashbuckle..

A couple of new-ish films:

Life of Crime - Based on an Elmore Leonard novel, kidnap goes wrong romp. Easy viewing ok-ish entertainment

Jersey Boys - Life of Frankie Valli - Based on the stage show. No real attempt to move it to the film medium but a fascinating story, great songs and lead role does a very very convincing Valli vocal.

Can't be bothered to keep writing about films here, but this one should be of interest to a few of you...

The Possibilities Are Endelss

James Hall and Edward Lovelace's documentary about Orange Juice front-man Edwyn Collins, the monstrously debilitating stroke he suffered and the incredible support that he received from his wife Grace Maxwell, is a genuinely moving piece of cinema. There are some rather meandering shots of coasts, rooftops and other more abstract images which may be intended to create a mood mirroring the lack of focus in the man's mind. Unfortuanately, for me at least, these often felt like padding. That aside, well worth seeing and not just for Orange Juice fans.

I'd be interested in seeing this for sure.

Did you read Grace Maxwell's book? I wasn't gone on her style or approach at all. I would've loved to have read his own take on events. I saw him live shortly after he came back on the scene, unable to walk unaided but wit as crisp as ever.

What's this nonsense about you not being bothered writing about films here anymore? You'll feel better tomorrow.

Paddington. The cuddly bear seeks asylum with a family in a two-bed council flat in Camberwell and learns how to adapt to quaint English ways. Not really, he is rescued by a plummy family somewhere in the toff territories. Luckily he has the right accent to blend right in. Young viewers chuckle as their adult companions implore Peter Capaldi's character to give Malcolm Tucker's take on proceedings.

"Get the fucking fuck back here, you fucking fucker, Milchman", added Tucker in the closing credit out-takes.

Been watching loads recently:

Enjoyed Imitation Game, Wild and Foxcatcher. Sort of enjoyed Birdman. Less keen on Riot Club. Nothing has been as good as the first month of 2014 though (12 Years a slave, Wolf of Wall Street, American Hustle)
