I was party to a discussion on Friday night about how the TV detective genre has been tapped to its very limits. Yes Cracker and Life on Mars have added a decent modern-ish twist but in the past we've had a host of amateurs that really did push credibility, with old ladies (Miss Marple), monks (Cadfel), antique dealers (Lovejoy), etc. Our favourites though were the appalling Manimal where a guy turned into a leopard or elephant at the key moments to assist him (the footage would literally be old footage of an elephant charging through the jungle rather than the context of the shop, etc) and Badger (Jerome from Robson and Jerome who'd solve animal crimes. Best line "No-one hurts a badger on my watch").

Good theme. I’ve volunteer those crime-busting horticulturalists Rosemary and Thyme. They ignore all the rules of detective work (like evidence) and forget that they’ve just convicted the person who’s meant to be paying them for the work. Top work ladies!

does anyone here remember 'sledge hammer' a somewhat bizarre comedy cop show from the 80's? it was basically about a trigger happy US cop who went round shooting people for the hell of it.

not sure how it holds up now, but i thought it was hilarious at the time!
