Totally forgot about one of the worst films I've ever seen, but as it was on TV when I got home from The Buffalo Bar last night, I was horribly reminded of it: Monster's Ball. What a pile of shit; a poor black woman (Halle Berry) finds comfort and love in the racist prison guard (Billy Bob Thornton), that leads her racially stereotyped husband (Puff Daddy) from death row to his execution. Billy Bob meanwhile finds his redemption between Berry's legs. The film is so crass, it almost feels like it could have been written as a wish fulfilment vehicle by a white supremacist with an unfulfilled hang up for black women; but who am I to argue with an Oscar for Halle Berry and a nomination for best original screenplay?
Also on the subject of overrated films, am I the only one who thinks that David Lynch hasn't made a good film since The Straight Story? I mean Erazerhead, Blue Velvet and Wild At Heart are all enjoyable entertainments, but can anybody explain to me why they are credited with such depth? And as for his later films, does anyone out there really rate Mullholland Drive, Lost Highway and worst of all, Inland Empire
