It's not all plain sailing. Spurs could easily get a difficult qualification draw and be out by the end of August. This is what happened to Everton in 2005, when we were drawn against Villareal - a very strong team who got to the semis that year.

I am genuinely pithily unarsed about the whole thing. 4th/5th/6th? It's hardly worth cracking the warm bottle of Bulmers open/sobbing into a pair of old pants over. To me it sums up just how this tournament has become the be all and end all for football.

I'm not saying I wouldn't be pleased this morning if we'd won, I just know that having lost I'm not that bothered. I've seen too many relegations with the club to know what real disappointment is about. I'm also relieved the season's now good as over - weekends without worrying about footy will be a pleasure... until the World Cup starts and then, to a lesser degree, it'll all start again.

With my reasonable hat on I can see why non-qualification for the CL might actually help teams like City, which are, by whatever nefarious means, in the process of building a team for the future. Not having the distraction of possibly two qualifying rounds will give Mancini a bit more time to decide who's in and who's out for the start of next season, plus a good bit of time to get them to gel as a team. I suppose it might've helped to test the team in those qualifying rounds, but I can see why it's certainly not the end of the world if not. By City's recent history standards it's been an OK season, glimpses of good things to come. All said and done, it was only that run of draws that killed you, and you still finished 5th, so not a disaster by any means.

I won't claim I wasn't gutted to lose that League Cup semi-final to you. That would have been something worth celebrating - a cup final of some sorts >>>>> qualifying for CL.

It’s a shame that the UEFA Cup is held in so much disdain these days. It’s a ridiculously long tournament, but I’ve been at a couple of the Fulham games this season and the quality and atmosphere have been great. Surely a good run in that tournament would be more fun than crashing out of Big Cup in August?

That said, I was delighted for Spurs last night. Always good to see a well-organised, proper football club get one of over a bunch of mercenary journeymen. I’m just hoping this doesn’t lead to Morinho being lured to Wastelands for next season.
