THE BLANCHE HUDSON WEEKEND (Leeds) (
http://www.myspace.com/theblanchehudsonweekend)
Top of the bill are The Blanche Hudson Weekend. The band are set to cause a stir with their first ever live appearance. Their first single appeared at the tail end of 2009 and their latest release (The Rats In The Cellar EP) having just come out on Odd Box - the band are picking up from where the The Manhattan Love Suicides left off.
The Blanche Hudson Weekend is here. Featuring Caroline and Darren (ex-Manhattan Love Suicides) along with a bunch of other Weekenders , and bringing to you all kinds of noise , fuzz , melody , dissonance , rawness , killer tunes and buzzsaw pop. Take a bit of 1960s girl group sounds , mix with Girls In The Garage type ramshackle production , add some gun slugging guitars and sugar sweet vocals with a keen ear for a great hook , then lock the doors , bolt the windows , switch off the phone , kill the lights , turn up the volume to ear splitting levels and enjoy The Blanche Hudson Weekend.
"Noise And Fury is a sugar laced melodic buzz bomb cemented by windswept effervescent skrees of MBV feedback albeit informed by a Ramones mindset" - Losing Today
BOY GENIUS (Brooklyn) (
http://www.myspace.com/boygeniuses)
Boy Genius are doing a small UK tour before their appearance at Indietracks and I am delighted they're playing their only London show for Odd Box. The band have been firm favourites here since their 'Eureka' EP came out back in 2007. Three years on the band have released their 2nd full length 'Staggering' on Greenpop Recordings.
""Brooklyn quartet Boy Genius has the same no-fuss charm that characterized a lot of 80s college rock: simple hooks, harmonies and melodies, ringing guitars - reliable stuff" - Time Out New York
"There’s something wounded in the sound of Boy Genius, a Brooklyn band with a knack for mid-’80s jangle-pop heroics. Perhaps it’s that skittish harmonica, or the bounding tempos, racing forward like a calf discovering the power of its own stride; maybe it’s the way Jason K sings, dangling his words on short strings before cutting them loose. Bittersweet and romantically infectious, Anchorage, the band’s full-length debut, is stocked with blissed-out sing-alongs ("Radio Silence”, “Eureka”, “Failing Gravity”—dig the wink to “Bold as Love” in that one) and colored, on the edges, by trumpet, glockenspiel, and tried-and-true male/female harmonies. “I am harboring a hope / That this harbor is my home,” K sings in the title track, while the band springs eternal around him—a salve for even the most broken of things" - Popmatters
INSECT GUIDE (Leeds) (
http://www.myspace.com/insectguide)
Formed in Leeds in late 2005, Insect Guide – Su Sutton and Stan Howells – have been sending ripples through the musical underground ever since thanks to their distinctive brand of DARK, CINEMATIC POP. Now expanded to a three piece by the addition of drummer Chris Cooper (Pale Saints) the band have recently recorded a session for Marc Riley on BBC 6 Music. Their 2nd LP" DARK DAYS & NIGHTS" is set to be released in July 2010 on Squirrel Records.
The band have picked up a lot of praise over the past few years:
“accessible and joyously barbed pop songs” - UNCUT (debut of the month)
"an irresistible pop masterpiece" - DROWNED IN SOUND
“a beautiful and idiosyncratic pop album” - SUBBA-CULTCHA
"Amazing cover of Dinosaur Jrs finest moment, slowed down and pumped full of mogadon" - NME
“recalls the likes of Slowdive and The Mary Chain at their most subtle and brutal” - CONTACTMUSIC
"sparkingly produced, beautifully written" - SOMEWERECOLD.COM
"beautiful, and sometimes sinister" - LEEDS GUIDE
"pure stratospheric fuzz-pop bliss" - SUBBA-CULTCHA.COM
“as dark as the most potent Velvet Underground” - DROWNED IN SOUND
MICKTRAVIS (Blackburn) (No Website, as yet)
Micktravis is thecontinuing alias of ex tompaulin songwriter Jamie Holman. Tompaulin enjoyed a three LP and seven single career, mostly with the fantastic Track And Field label; notching up two John Peel Sessions and shows all over Europe along the way. Jamie is now releasing records on the winterbird label and continues to write confessional songs about girls and fighting.
