Oh dear, well I can't stand the Fratellis but I don't mind The Vaccines at all. Not seen them live.
Here's the blog piece I wrote on them in October. Cue the abuse...
"When it comes to guitar music, it's often said that each generation has 'defining' bands. Not necessarily the ones that sell the most records or pack out the biggest venues, bands that are measured by importance, influence and cultural impact. In essence: a band people can believe in. Contrary to Noel Gallagher's wishes, people do put their lives in the hands of rock and roll bands.
Just looking at the last 35 years, we've had The Clash, The Smiths, The Stone Roses, Nirvana, Suede, Oasis, The Strokes and The Libertines to name a few. Bands who are more than just good tunes and a decent haircut. Bands who are adored by some, reviled by others, but ultimately define and transform an era.
So who is this generations' equivalent? As much as I love The Pains Of Being Pure At Heart, it's unlikely that they will have any kind of cultural significance or inspire a wave of copycats with jangly guitars being slightly twee. Maybe hindsight will prove things wrong, but it would seem that we're left wanting on the guitar-band-heroes front just now.
What does the future hold? According to some rather over excited press reports and equally over excited major label A&R men, London 4 piece The Vaccines are what the world has been waiting for. Their first few gigs have caused a frenzy, a scrum of journos, celebs and suits waving fat cheques.
A similar thing has been happening to US rockers Mona, but they're crap.
With just a handful of demos and a début single recorded, it's too early to judge how history will remember The Vaccines. They could be forgotten about by this time next year, they could have imploded by then - or they could be legends. Don't believe the hype just yet, but they seem to have the tunes to warrant attention. So maybe (and here's hoping) we're witnessing the start of something genuinely exciting."
I'm sick to death of Wreckin Bar already though...
