The Inbetweeners Movie
This lazy, half arsed spin off from the popular TV series follows the well worn path of such TV spin offs as Holiday On The Buses, the Are You Being Served? film and Kevin & Perry Go Large, by taking it's main characters and sending them on holiday. The story arc is one big cliché, it has little if anything to add to the already diminishing TV shows and although there are a few laughs here and there, they do seem to be flogging a dead horse. Even die-hard fans of the show are likely to be pretty disappointed.

The Skin I Live In
The audience I saw this film with had a curious reaction, often letting out nervous laughter at inappropriate moments of the film. I'm not sure why this is, but think it may be something to do with preconceptions about director, Pedro Almodovar. Almodovar's most popular films in the UK have been the broad comedy Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown and the heightened reality of melodramas such as Bad Education. As this film has an imaginative story line, further away from realism than any of his previous dramas, I'm guessing some people jumped to the conclusion that it must be a comedy. The film is not without humour, but it is not a comedy. Some people seemed put off by the lack of realism, but I liked it and saw it more as a kind of fable.
Thematically it has something in common with both George Franju's Eyes Without A Face and Hiroshi Teshigahara's adaptation of Kobo Abe's novel Face Of Another and like these two films is a mixture of body horror and art house film making. Well worth seeing, but I recommend going to it with as little foreknowledge as possible.

The Salt of Life
Semi sequel to the unexpecedly delightful Mid August Lunch.
A little disappointing. The main enjoyment in the first film came from the characters of the elderly ladies, who only play a small part in this one.
The character of Gianni this time takes centre stage, but is not interresting enough to carry the film.
Quite watchable, but not as good as expected.

This Years Raindance Film Festival runs from 28th September - 9th October at the Apollo Cinema,. Piccadilly.
More adventurous, more intimate, less corporate and less starry the the increasingly overblown London Film Festival, Raindance aims to nurture, support and promote independent films and filmmakers from the UK and around the world. The full line-up of feature films boasts over 90 UK premieres from 36 countries, including more than 30 international premieres, and a further 137 shorts.
Past Raindance-premiered hits include Pulp Fiction, Memento, the Blair Witch Project, Ghost World and Love Exposure, plus every year there has been several gems that do not go on to get a full UK release.

Raindance is my favourite film festival. I heartily recommend checking the line up out and taking a punt on seeing something new.

The Troll Hunter
This Norwegian creature movie has a droll sense of humour that makes a welcome change to the sassy one liners that permeate American movies of a similar ilk. Unfortunately this isn't enough to lift the film much above meiocrity. A few good ideas, but pretty boring.

Post Mortem

A morgue worker in Santiago declares his love for his burlesque dancer neighbour as the Allende government is overthrown.
A small scale drama with a big backdrop that drew me in almost without me noticing and left me feeling a little unsettled (in a good way).
The attempt to reflect the wider political and historical issues in the study of it's charmles, misfit central character doesn't always pay off, but this is still an engrossing film, well filmed in mostly static shots with rather unusual framing and a fine central performance. Anybody who liked director Pablo Larraín's earlier film, Tony Moreno (the one about a serial killer obsessed with John Travolta's character in Saturday Night Fever), should like this one too, despite it's appeal being less imediately apparent.

Kill List

By turns, a kitchen sink drama with (semi improvised?) dialogue worthy of a Mike Leigh film, a brutally violent hit man thriller and an occult oddity a little reminiscent of The Wicker Man; this film by all rights should simply not work, but go with the flow and it really is well worth seeing. There is a fine strain of black humour running through the film, the central cast are all excellent and it sustains momentum throughout, despite the odd gear changes

Tomboy

This French drama about a young girl passing herself off as a boy is by no means a bad film, but ultimately it is too slight to really make an impression. The young actor who plays the girl's six year old sister is however very, very good; I've never seen such a naturalistic performance from such a young child.
