It's often the way in indie circles to have the whole 'more obscure than you' thing regarding bands you dig. It goes unsaid but we all know it.

So what are the bands it's not cool to admit you like, but you do?

I'm not talking 'kitsch', or ironic, so don't even try it.

I'll begin with Muse. Love them, always have. From the same county I am from. Great guitar riffs, mad lyrics about all the stuff that interests me, stayed (relatively) out of the public eye given their enormous popularity, very down to earth yet totally fucking mad and insanely funny.

I'll add more after a little thought. Please spill your guts, this really interests me.

I'm actually a fan of pre-Bohemian Rhapsody Queen. Their first 3 albums were great. Then they released A Night At The Opera and it was downhill from there.

Listen to this for example, I think it's ace,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=t_cjLkJQvaQ

I always feel slightly ashamed of liking Suede because they became so horrible in the end. Those first 2 albums with Bernard Butler were life-changing for me. Then they got rid of him, wrote some pop hits (how dire is Filmstar) and the Britpop thing was in full swing by then so they were quids in.

Anyway - stick that Queen song on.

Jose, I'm with you on Muse. They have actually produced some of the greatest riffs of the last 30 years. New Born is just genius. I don't possess any albums - or if I do I don't recall listening to them - but they are a great singles band.

I still love a lot of early 80s rockabilly. Even the sad stuff like the Polecats. I know the originals are better but I still love the campness of the 80s scene.

And I've stood up for the better stuff by Coldplay on here before, such as The Scientist, Fix You and Clocks. Less so the last 5 or 6 years, mind.

And I love Rancid, who were never cool.

There is the odd Coldplay song I like actually, but like you said - less so the later stuff. Never quite been able to get into Muse though. I think some of the ridiculousness is quite fun and I don't dislike them, it's just not for me. The riff to Knights Of Cydonia is a pomp rock classic though

Maybe I'm just old and spend too much time with small children who, unburdened by history, see every song as equivalent (to them Jose is as Black Francis, being someone who sings on one of the 'loud'records in the pile). But, post-irony, is there really anything that people need to make excuses for? I was going to do a list for this thread but couldn't think of anything on my iPod, starting from the Quo and going from there, that anyone could convincingly take umbrage at.

Have had weird looks when admitting to the following in polite conversation:

Twister Sister
(early) Iron Maiden
(early) Genesis
(early) Marillion
(early/70s) Status Quo

(I don't get Muse, never have)

As this forum is largely frequented by a bunch of middle age blokes, most of whom continue to hanker after the music of their teens, isn't pretty much anything we say we like inherently uncool?

I love Muse's first 2 albums. They went more irritating and hysterical after that but I do quite like the fact that a band that a) batshit and b) talented can become massive. It's comforting that.

I don't really believe in guilty pleasures but I will happily admit to being a fan of most 70s/80s soft rock type stuff. And U2. I like U2.

I even like some of Frank Stallone's music. Don't believe in guilty pleasures or coolness.

The 'whole 'more obscure than you' thing is so true to a point that sometimes i've wanted to intervene in conversations and say 'Fuck you, you've just entirely made that up to go one better'

I still believe that lots of people sit at their computers trying to seek out unknown bands, even if they're shite, rather than appreciate more known great bands.

Great posts, and good to see I'm not alone.

Oasis are another for me. Everything they did up until around 98 I absolutely love, especially live.

Lots of mainstream pop, not so much singers but songs - Umbrella, Telephone, Shewolf - I love listening to, almost studying in fact, as I think these are the best structured songs being written atm.

And lots of New Wave type stuff, which isn't as 'uncool' but still the kind of thing some people wouldn't admit to liking beyond a kitsch appreciation - Kids In America, My Sharona, Best Friend's Girl etc.

I expected to see U2 and Coldplay in here. Neither band I'm into, though The Joshua Tree is a great record, and the song 'Trouble' by Coldplay I really like.

Oh and 'Slippery When Wet' by Bon Jovi is a fucking great pop record that I've always loved.

I love records where every song could be a single.

I'm forced to keep abreast of chart pop by having 12 and 14 year old daughters so I don't mind Eliza Doolittle and Ellie Goulding, but I think Ed Sheeran is a really good songwriter. 'Little Things', the new single by 1-Direction is a pretty good navel gazing song of love and loss. Obviously having a personal love song sung by 5 different blokes kind of ruins it but I'd much rather hear that than fucking Mumford and Sons. At least they're not all about Jesus.

I did genuinely like Busted a few years ago too. Never liked McFly for some reason, couldn't take to them.

I wasn't expecting honesty quite as brutal as that.
