Like any columnist with a HND in Shock Tactics you have to read her articles with a tablespoon of salt. However the reaction to her last column (defending her friend Suzanne Moore against some pretty over the top Twitter attacks from the trangender community) has gone bonkers. Yes, she said some extremely funny but un-PC things but removing the column from the website, referring her to the Press Complaints Committee and MPs demanding she gets sacked is a) anti freedom of speech and b) showing a complete lack of a sense of humour.

Here is the article, republished on a Telegraph blog, after its removal from its Observer home:

I saw the Twitter fuss and read the article. Didn't think it was particularly offensive - and it was certainly obvious that you should take it with a pinch of salt.

I really can't see anything here that is in any way unreasonable. Burchill is a shit stirrer, but nothing wrong in that either, as far as I'm concerned.

I disagree with the fact that Burchill's article was 'extremely funny', or that freedom of speech extends to hate speech and abusive name calling. The article should never have been published but, at the same time, should never have been taken down. I too have always taken Burchill's articles with pinch of salt but the criticism and anger that followed Burchill's latest is entirely justified.

I think Burchill is a bit of an arse wipe but the only thing that offends me in all that gibberish is that she used the term 'single mother'. It's lone parent, arsehole. Anyway I take everything that these people say with a lake of salt.

A few responses on Twitter, from people who thought the sentences "The cliché is that female anger is always turned inwards rather than outwards into despair. We are angry with ourselves for not being happier, not being loved properly and not having the ideal body shape – that of a Brazilian transsexual." amounted to hate speech.
